Jamir Watkins, 6’7 SF Trenton Catholic 2020
The VCU commit dominated his matchup with Kentucky-bound Lance Ware. He knocked a couple of three-pointers in the opening quarter and was always in attack mode on the offensive end. Watkins attacked the basket strong as he either scored or was fouled.
He had a great game on defense as well, deflecting numerous passes and blocking a couple shots. Watkins is a top-12 player in the senior class, but the VCU commit made an argument to be in the top five.
Freddie Young Jr, 6’3 PG Trenton Catholic 2021
No one improved their stock more than Young Jr. The junior point guard was the catalyst for Trenton Catholic’s victory over Camden as he made good decisions throughout the game.Young Jr. was almost unguardable off the bounce as he lived in the lane.
While freshman Dajuan Wagner Jr. was able to get by him on occasions, Young Jr. stifled the freshman for most of the game. He is not the most high profile player in the junior class, but the Princeton Day transfer is a ball player. Young Jr. had a tremendous showing against Camden and is ready for a big junior season.
Wesley Robinson, 6’7 PF Life Center Academy 2020
Life Center Academy needed someone to make plays down the stretch against Timber Creek. That someone was Robinson as he made key baskets late in the fourth quarter to pull out a 54-52 victory. He grabbed numerous defensive rebounds and altered shots on the defensive end.
Robinson even showed off his handles in the open floor as he brought the ball up the court on a couple of occasions. Sophomore Justin Hawkins was big for Life Center in the first half, but Robinson was the one who took the Warriors over the finish line. He is a tough, post player that should shoot up the rankings.
Jalen Bergen and Eric Benjamin, 5’11 PG Timber Creek 2020
It’s hard to separate the Timber Creek guards as they kept the Chargers in the game against Life Center. Bergen knocked three shots from behind the arc and was a pest on the defensive end. He unfortunately fouled out of the game, but Bergen was responsible for keeping Timber Creek in the game.
Benjamin took over in the second half as he scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. He knocked a pair of clutch three-pointers late in the fourth quarter and tied the game with a tough and-one layup. Benjamin’s ability to score in the fourth quarter is huge for a team that has aspirations for a deep run in South Jersey Group 3.
Jordan Martin, 6’2 SG Bordentown 2020
Martin came into Midnight Madness as a high-level scorer and he displayed that against Point Pleasant Beach. The senior guard was able to get to the basket with ease and converted several fancy layups. Martin missed a potential three-point play with one of those layups, but that was the only blemish on his performance.
He is not just a driver as Martin knocked down a couple of shots from the perimeter. He also had a solid game on the defensive end as he was a pest on the ball. Martin is just scratching the surface of what he can accomplish in his senior season and his stock is only beginning to rise.
