I realize many teams will run variations of zones, however, I’m still a sucker for a good one on one matchup. In this article PH takes a look at the top 1 on 1 matchups, I’m looking forward to watching this year.
1. Anthony Hunter (#6 2020) 5’11 PG Durango vs Zaon Collins (#2 2021) 6’1 PG Bishop Gorman – Durango and BG meet twice this season. Hunter is one of the best on-ball defenders in the state. He will most likely be defending Collins who is one of the most advanced offensive players. Both are exceptionally quick and terrific run and jump athletes.
2. Joshua Jefferson (#4 2022) 6’6 SF Liberty vs Jaxon Kohler (#1 2022) 6’8 PF Coronado – Two of the top players in the class of 2022 go head to head twice this season. Both are technicians on the block, that possess excellent footwork. It will be interesting to see if they guard each other straight up, or force the opposing team into running doubles.
3. Dayshawn Wiley (#10 2021) 6’3 SG Desert Pines vs Zarius Benson Moore (#30 2020) 6’4 SG Canyon Springs – Battle of super Alpha’s. Wiley is one of the most underrated players in the city. He’s an explosive athlete that can also knock down 3’s. ZBM has that same explosiveness and 3 point shooting ability. They are both hard-nosed confident players that compete on both ends of the floor. It will be a lot of fun to see them get after it.
4. Cort Ballinger (#47 2021) 5’10 PG Bishop Manogue vs Issac Wood (#30 2021) 6’2 PG Galena – Two of the top players in the North are also on my must-see list. Ballinger is a relentless ballhawk that prides himself on defense. Wood is a magician with the basketball that can get anywhere he wants on the floor. I haven’t had a chance to watch much of either of them in person, so I’m interested in seeing who’s strength plays out.
5. Larry Holmes (#29 2020) 6’1 SG Arbor View vs Emanuel Austin (#16 2020) 6’0 SG Legacy – These guys have similar builds but completely different offensive games. Holmes is trying to get to the rim or shoot 3’s. Austin is a mid-range assassin. They probably will be spending quite a bit of time guarding each other when they play, so it will be fun to see whose style is more effective.
