Many use the analogy of brotherhood or family to describe their relationship with their teammates and coaches. For a few players and coaches, that description is a literal one. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the top father and son combos in the state this season.
HC Mike and Milos Uzan 6’3 PG Desert Pines 2022 – Coach Uzan has been one of the most successful coaches in the state, including leading the Jags to 3 3A state titles. His son Mike is one of the best PG’s in the state and one of the best in the sophomore class overall. The son has a slick handle and is a tremendous passer. He has great vision and is a next play, player with the ability to see the game frames ahead.
HC Bill and Cort Ballinger 5’10 PG Bishop Manogue 2021 – Bill Ballinger is in the first year of his second stint at Manogue. He inherits a battle tested squad including his son Cort. It all starts on the defensive end for Cort. He is a lockdown defender who was among the state’s leaders in steals last season with nearly 4 per game. The type of defender that always wants to guard the other team’s best player, In the playoffs last season, he harrassed Clark star Frankie Collins into a 1-9 shooting night.
HC Kei and Kei Childress Jr 6’1 PG Rancho 2022 – Head Coach Kei Childress enters his first full year with the Rams, as he took over for dad midway through the year last season. He son Kei Childress Jr is the starting PG and one of the main contributors to the team. A cerebral playmaker with a good handle, Jr will be in charge with keeping the Ram’s wing playmakers happy this season. He averaged nearly 3ppg while seeing limited action last year.
HC John and Gavin Balistere 6’1 PG Boulder City 2020 – John Balistere is one of the most influential figures in Nevada basketball. He’s a lifer that’s seen it all. On the floor, Gavin is a hard nose, scrappy defender. It’s no surprise that he’s a team-first player willing to sacrifice for the overall good of the club. He saw action in all 27 games last season, helping the Eagles to 24 wins.
HC Pat and Jason Condron 6’1 SG 2021 – Coach Condron is a throwback, that requires maximum discipline and effort from his teams. Perhaps no player embodies that more on this year’s squad than his son Jason. He’s a tireless worker, that lives in the gym. Jason will provide outside shooting, ballhandling and perimeter defense for a Palo squad returning 4 starters from last seasons team. As a sophomore last season he was among the team leaders in 3’s despite seeing limited minutes.
