They won 14 games his first year and have amassed 41 wins in the last two years, including a conference championship last year. This season, they return UNLV commit Donavan Yap, Big Man Jaylon Lee, and pogo stick guard Larry Holmes. Last year was the first time in school’s history they made it to state and won a state game. They have size, depth, and shooting. In a year when the state championship race is as wide open as it’s ever been, why not the Aggies? In this article, PH takes a look at some of the top players for the Arbor View Aggies.
Head Coach:
Dustin Clayton 4th Season
Conference: 4A Mountain Northwest
Key Returners:
Donavan Yap 6’3 SG Arbor View 2020 (#5 2020) – Yap is the prototypical combo guard. He can get his whenever he wants, but he also has the ability to make plays for his teammates. Yap is more of a scorer than a shooter, but possess the ability to knock down consecutive shots in a hurry, and seems to get better the bigger the situation. Think, right-hand version of D’Angelo Russell.
Larry Holmes 6’2 SG Arbor View 2020 (#29 2020) (featured image) – Holmes plays on the Prephoops circuit in the summer, so I’ve had a lot of opportunities to see him. That’s not accidental. I absolutely love watching this kid play! Tough competitor, and undervalued run and jump athlete. Holmes has elite slashing ability, and range out to the college 3. One of the best two-way players in the state. On a senior-laden team that reached the state Semi’s, Holmes, averaged, 11 points 3rpg, 2 assist and 2 steals. Fly’s under the radar as one of the most productive players in the state.
Noah Do 6’3 SF 2020 – Do provides floor spacing and leadership to the squad. He excels in catch and shoots. Playing next to Holmes, and Yap should provide him with ample opportunity.
Deon McDaniel 6’4 PF 2020 – McDaniels is going to instantly provide depth in the frontcourt. The 6’4 forward is a bouncy athlete, that is can grab boards and finish around the rim. He gives AV a solid option when Lee is off the floor.
Jaylon Lee 6’8 C 2020 (#14 2020) – Lee is one of the most dominating post in the state. Physically few players match up with him. He’s an elite rim protector and rebounder and is the key difference between the Aggies being a good team and a great team.
David Moore 6’2 SF 2020 (#60 2020) – All glue type of player. Moore is an unselfish defender, who provides depth and defensive versatility to the squad. Solid rebounder, and sound decision-maker and passer from the high post.
Key Newcomers:
Mikey Medlock 6’3 SG 2020 (#52 2020) – Mikey Medlock has become a trending topic with those that discuss high school basketball in Las Vegas. I’ve made this point very clear, there are only two types of basketball players, those that can play, and those that can’t. In an open gym of about 70 players, (including some pretty good C/O 2019 players), he stood out. After watching him again, I’m convinced he’s one of the main candidates for a break out season. He’s a long rangy athlete and a versatile playmaker. Because of the way AV is built, I expect defenses to focus on shutting down Yap, opening up driving lanes for Holmes, who is more than capable of drawing two. Because teams, will be reluctant to take a body off Lee, I expect the ball to find Medlock for open shots quite a bit, and he has shown the ability to be lethal when left open.
Top Prospect: Jaylon Lee – With Yap already signed Lee becomes the top prospect. A physical big-bodied post presence, who is coveted by D2 and D3 universities. Lee has the ability to control games from the interior and is an absolute deterrent at the rim. If Arbor View goes deep in the playoffs, I expect Lee to definitely turn some heads.
