The two sides played a close game with Oldsmar Christian winning 77-73.
Here is a look at the most intriguing prospects from the evening.
Khalil Shaheed (Oldsmar Christian)
If there was an MVP award to be handed out, it goes to 2020 6’3″ guard Khalil Shaheed with his 22-point night. Making the move over from Superior Collegiate last month, he has settled in nicely at Oldsmar Christian. He was confident with the ball, dishing out some fancy passes and hit some shots from the mid-range and 3-point mark. Most importantly, we continue to see him go to the basket at will and score with his variety of lay-ins.
Demoi Bradley (Inspire Prep)
The second half that 2020 6’4″ guard Demoi Bradley had for Inspire Prep was special. He was all over the boards, cleaning up misses and driving in for his own baskets. He had 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half alone and continues to keep the Cardinals afloat. When Bradley is locked in, he’s a highly athletic guard/wing type.
Angel Muniz (Oldsmar Christian)
The shooting from 2020 6’4″ guard Angel Muniz helped Oldsmar Christian a ton in this game. He had 14 points which included four 3’s, two in the second half. His final 3-pointer was a game-changing jumper from right in front of his bench to put his squad ahead 70-63 with just over three minutes left. Muniz was in his groove tonight.
Khalyl Simmons (Inspire Prep)
It was a slow start for 2020 6’3″ Inspire Prep guard Khalyl Simmons, but I liked how he took chances and created openings for others. He is the clear focus on this offense and with 16 points, he certainly wishes a few more of his 3’s fell. However, you can’t fault Simmons for being assertive and simply trying to get to the rack. He is a very tough-minded point guard.
Javaris Patterson (Oldsmar Christian)
All 11 points from 2021 6’6″ forward Javaris Patterson were crucial. He was vocal, tough and took charges in key situations. Patterson is a tweener and the lone returnee from last season’s roster. He does a lot that goes unnoticed and not on the stat sheet. He simply makes everyone better around him.
Jerry Vaughn (Oldsmar Christian)
Coming off the bench in the second half, 2020 6′ guard Jerry Vaughn brought instant speed and had the ball on a string. He had seven points including five free throws as he drew contact often and proved to be a downhill attacker. Vaughn will be essential next to Shaheed as the two 2020 guards control the offense.
Woody Machado (Oldsmar Christian)
It was only a six-point night for 2023 6’3″ guard Woody Machado but all of his buckets proved he’s growing confidence quickly. A lengthy and speedy prospect, I loved the energy and decisiveness he played with. Look for Machado to continue to get better as the season expands and his role increases. I love his upside.
