Hapeville tried to rally back in the second half but South Atlanta kept the momentum and took home the win. I was impressed with several guards from both teams. JaQuavian Florence and John Lawton of South Atlanta carried their team to victory with their phenomenal chemistry on the court. Hapeville guards Miles Carter and Terence Thorbs are equally talented and deserve to be recognized for their hustle and offensive contribution.
JaQuavian Florence, 2020, 6’3 PG is a natural facilitator. He’s a special player with the ability to finish aggressively around the rim. He thrives on the hardwood with his score-first mentality. However, his passing game should not be slept on. He’s far from a selfish player. Florence elevates everyone around him when he’s in the game. He’s a leader and it shows. His ability to handle the ball, set up his teammates and attack the rim makes him a valuable player. He finished the game with 6 points, 10 assists, and 12 rebounds.
John Lawton, 2022, 6’1 PG can’t be stopped when he gets going. He’s the type of player your eyes stayed glued to when he’s on the court because you don’t want to miss what he will do next. His explosiveness and high energy brings momentum that can’t be matched. Lawton plays with grit and hustles on every possession. Also, add sharp shooter to his resume. Once he gets started, there’s no stopping him. He put up 24 points and earned every one of them.
Miles Carter, 2021, 5’8 PG is a floor general that plays with confidence. His ball-handling abilities make him difficult to guard. He can split defenders and finish explosively. Carter sees the floor like a true point guard. His passing ability is unique and strategic. He creates offense for his teammates with his quick and no-look passes. When guarding Carter, one should be prepared to protect their ankles. His fancy crossover had defenders tripping up and the crowd roaring. Carter scored 18 points with ease.
Terence Thorbs, 2020, 6’4 SG is long and bouncy. He plays with heart and gives every possession his all. His willingness to be productive separates him from his competition. Thorbs contributes on both ends of the floor. He rebounds, forces turnovers and attacks the rim. His ability to creatively create offense is impressive. I look forward to watching Thorbs grow as a player this season. He scored 11 points.
