Getting right to it, let’s take a look at some guards who stood out. These guards left their marks in different ways. Stay tuned as we have a couple breakdowns from this eight team scrimmage.
Guards:
Dominic Chizmar (2022) | 6-3 WG | Toledo Woodward
In our first viewing of Chizmar he flashed some good traits of his game. Didn’t settle for the jumper, drove to the basket and finished through contact. Also, knocked down the off balance floater, a good part of his game. Got teammates involved as a secondary ball handler, often cutting to the basket. Active hands on defense creating steals.
Jalen Sullinger (2021) | 5-9 PG | Thomas Worthington
Sullinger was solid the game we watched of his. Pushed the tempo, the defense quite frankly couldn’t keep up with him. Found open teammates in the half court and transition. Every missed shot has a chance to be a transition bucket with this Thomas Worthington team because they play FAST, a big reason for that is Sullinger. Flashed on ball defensive instincts, may lack traditional size but it isn’t a problem with the junior as he makes up for it.
Chance Groce (2021) | 6-4 WG | Linden-McKinley
Groce was his normal self Friday night, a scoring guard that loves to attack the rim and that’s exactly what he did. Finished through traffic, worked with and without the ball. Even showed creating ability for teammates. The junior is maturing and his game shows that as he’s consistently making the smart play.
Joey Zalewski (2023) | 6-2 WG | Thomas Worthington
My first viewing of the Worthington freshman was a good one. Joey is primed to be a big part of the varsity lineup right away. Flashed athleticism that is advanced for his age off the rip. Noticeable vertical that allowed him to sky for rebound and block shots. Knocked the three ball down off the catch, ready to shoot before the catch. Finished in the fast break, switching hands to keep defender away. A noticeable basketball IQ already as well. A player I can’t wait to see develop already.
Trevell Adams (2020) | 5-9 PG | Columbus South
Adams did work Friday night and was simply to good for his matchups he faced. Tough on-ball defense forced turnovers, wasted no time in getting the ball up court for the fast break. Finished the fast break often with a layup or acrobatic finish. Knocked down mid range pull ups, often getting defender off balance. Adams stepping into a starting role that he’s been ready for, for awhile.
