The 13th annual Fresh Coast Classic will tip off the Wisconsin high school basketball season this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, some of the best competition in the state will gather at Brown Deer high school to compete for the right to start the season 1-0.
Prep Hoops Wisconsin gives you six prospects to watch out for at Brown Deer this weekend.
Logan Landers will have a great opportunity to start his season off on the right foot. Landers and his Brookfield Academy teammates will begin their season on Friday night at 6:00 PM when they take on Rufus King.
Landers figures to be in for a huge season after producing all-star like numbers as a sophomore. The 6-foot-7 junior power forward is able to take over games in the paint. With his combination of size and skill on the block, he almost always adds two points to his team’s score when he gets the ball in good position.
There are a lot of big names that will be taking the floor in this event. Quinton Murrell, while not a huge name, will be one of the best prospects to lace up his shoes this weekend. Murrell is a fantastic guard who can give defenses headaches with his hard-wired scoring skills. Murrell can use his length to drive into the lane and finish around the hoop. Or, he can step outside and hit a jump shot.
Whatever the defense is willing to give him, Murrell is willing to take it.
Carter Gilmore will be the best player participating at the Fresh Coast Classic in 2019. Gilmore, who accepted a PWO to Wisconsin in August, will be a top candidate for Mr. Basketball in the state as a senior.
Gilmore is the type of prospect that is impossible to stop — opposing teams can only hope to slow him down. He can score, pass, rebound, shoot, and defend. Gilmore has a full package of skills. Expect the forward to go off in his first game of the season.
Dino Cook Jr. 6’4 / F Milwaukee Madison
Many Wisconsin high school basketball pundits will find out just how good Dino Cook Jr. is this weekend when Milwaukee Madison takes on Arrowhead. The freshman will look to make his high school debut in a big way, as he has been named as a starter for the Knights in their first game.
Cook is definitely a player to watch out for in the 2019-20 season.
Jalen Johnson and Jamari Sibley are gone. Now, it is up to James Graham to defend Nicolet’s 2019 state title. It may take him a while to adjust to his new role, but he has enough talent to lead Nicolet to another winning season.
Graham is tough to stop for multiple different reasons, but when he is nailing outside jumpers, it is all but over for the defense. The 6-foot-6 small forward also seems to have supplemented his typical catch-and-shoot jumper with an off the dribble pull up.
Defenders who are guarding James Graham in 2019-20 should prepare for a long and demoralizing game.
In the matchup of the weekend, and possibly even the season, Darius Hannah and MAS will take on the previously mentioned James Graham and Nicolet. After not being able to play for most of his junior season, I think that it is safe to say that Hannah will be ready to go on Saturday. The forward proved that his health is no longer an issue when he dominated the AAU Circuit over the summer.
If Nicolet gets good play from Graham, then the Knights probably get the win. But, if Hannah has a big game, MAS is going to be tough to beat.
