Both the Heritage Hall Chargers and Millwood Falcons ushered in a new season on Tuesday night and like last season, the game was highly competitive and intense.
Heritage Hall increased their level of play in the fourth quarter and pulled out their first win of the regular season, 65-57. There were four players in this game that stood out and helped add fuel to the fire that was this game.
Trey Alexander: The inevitable selection is junior standout Alexander, who had a dominating three quarters, scoring 19 points while adding six assists and seven rebounds. The fourth quarter, however, was special for Alexander where he scored 11 of his 30 total points and carried the Chargers back from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth.
Through the first game, Alexander seemed more in-control than he did last season, yet faster.
Millwood’s Isaiah Williams was the star player for Millwood, scoring 24 points. He was neck-and-neck with Alexander until the fourth quarter where he got in foul trouble and only scored two points, which also contributed to the Charger’s late comeback.
Williams, who effectively played the point-forward position for the Falcons netted four threes through three quarters and was the undoubted alpha for Millwood. Questionable calls in the fourth quarter hampered his impact on the game in the fourth quarter on both ends of the court.
If you don’t know the name Sebastian Perry, get familiar with it because the freshman guard looked anything but like a freshman. His first high school bucket came by a corner three, 30 seconds after he checked in the game. More surprisingly, Perry looked as confident as any other veteran varsity player tonight.
Perry finished the night with 11 points and shot 2-of-5 from three. Also, Perry was a fearless defender, who was responsible for three deflections that resulted in steals and a steal of his own.
Heritage Hall head coach Chris Hamilton felt confident enough in his freshman to play him down the stretch in the fourth quarter, too.
Lastly, Millwood’s outstanding senior, Myles Jeffires, contributed mightily to this game for the Falcons. His game isn’t and wasn’t as flamboyant as Alexander’s or Williams’, but his contribution was just as or more important for his team.
Jeffries has always been a competent player, and it all came to fruition in Millwood’s first game of the regular season. He finished the game with 17 points and hit three triples. Jeffries’ skill set will surely get him to the next level of basketball.
Both Heritage Hall and Millwood are expected to compete in their classes this season and will surely be involved in the State Tournament at the end of the season. These four players will be a lead reason why their teams get to that point.
