Continue ReadingThe Charm City Classic has been the home for the MIAA vs WCAC for the past three years. This year’s event was held at Reitz Arena on the campus of Loyola (MD) University. To open things up, Archbishop Spalding faced off against Archbishop Carroll. Carroll defeated Spalding by a final score of 65-22.
Here are five takeaways from the contest.
Carroll’s experience vs Spalding’s youth
Carroll is a senior-laden team and it showed from the opening tip. The intensity they brought defensively, their size overall and the way they executed sets were clear indications. Spalding still has a ways to go in each of those categories, but with a handful of underclassmen being part of their rotation, it’s expected to take some losses to teams such as Carroll.
Cam Whitmore shows signs of health
Coming out of middle school, Whitmore was one of the coveted prospects in the Baltimore area. He was sidelined all of his freshman season with a knee injury only to re-injure the same knee this past spring. This was my first time seeing the now 6-foot-6 wing in action and he showed some good things. He still has an explosive first step that gets him from the three-point line to the paint in the blink of an eye. He goes up strong around the rim an accepts contact along the way. Defensively, he utilizes his length to disrupt shots. In this particular game, he acted as the anchor of the 2-3 zone and disrupted a few passes with his length.
Kris King leads the way
King had a game-high 14 points for Carroll to lead them in the blowout win. The 6-foot-4 wing has good size and length on the perimeter, but made his presence known by getting out in the lanes on the break and finishing. Carroll had a well-balanced scoring attack overall, but it was King who sparked their transition attack that eventually led them in building their huge advantage.
C.J. Scott contributes in many ways
Scott is a big part of the Spalding attack because of his versatility as an offensive player. He can act as a forward, wing or even bring up the ball in some stints. The 6-foot-5 Swiss army knife has an impressive one-handed flush in the first half after a quick first step going baseline. Like Whitmore, Scott is expected to have an impact on the glass because of his size. He worked hard in that department today.
Brown gets involved
Cam’ron Brown is a sophomore guard for Carroll who finished this game with 11 points. The 5-foot-11 guard is slippery with the basketball and it showed as he was able to draw fouls both off the dribble and on shot attempts. Brown converted on all four of his free-throws and had a smooth-looking three in transition in the fourth quarter. He showed consistent energy and intensity throughout even with his team holding a convincing lead.
