Big names such as Evan Mobley, and Mikey Williams took the court and created much fanfare and buzz with their performances. On day 2 of Battle Zone, several players were able to light it up from deep and Prep Hoops takes a look at these performers.
Paris Dawson (2020, Corona Centennial, Guard) In a highly anticipated against Ysidro, Paris Dawson was huge in the spotlight in front of his home crowd. Dawson hit a game high six three pointers en route to a 89-48 win against the San Diego squad. With the transfer of his ex fellow back court mate DJ Davis to Riverside Poly and wing Jaylen Clark to Etiwanda, Paris took advantage as the leader of his team. Known as more of a mid range shooter, Dawson extended his range and showed off his stroke from deep. In addition to his outside shooting, he played excellent man defense and was very vocal with his defensive communication and voicing out rotations to his teammates. Dawson finished with 22 points.
Rancho Christian shooting guard Luke Turner is one of the best shooters in the Class of 2021.
Luke Turner (2021, Rancho Christian, Forward) Facing a short handed Westminister team, Luke Turner showcased his full arsenal at Battlezone. The rangy forward had no problem getting his shot off en route to a game high of 24 points. Turner does a great job of sprinting to the corners and getting in position to launch from beyond the arc. In addition to the deep ball, Turner is able to use his 6’6″ height to grab offensive boards and score on putbacks. He also isn’t afraid to take it to the rim.
Sebastian Mendoza (2020, Hillcrest, Guard) The senior Mendoza averaged 29 points and 10 rebounds a game last year and is still underrated. Mendoza is a silky smooth wing with several moves to get space for his shot. He shows the potential to both catch and shoot, and also to create for himself off the dribble. The San Jose St. commit finished with 18 points to lead Hillcrest.
Chris Anderson (2020, Hillcrest, Guard) Anderson finished with 21 points, including 4 three pointers very early on. The 6’2″ guard has a soft touch and shows potential to be a deep threat. Hes quick and also accelerates into the lane well. Anderson has the potential to immediately contribute at the Juco and NAIA levels and has the potential to add to his game.
Yassine Gharram (2020, Foothills Christian, Guard) Leading all players with a 40 point performance, Gharram scored in a myriad of ways. He put on a scoring exhibition in the 82-56 win over Temecula Valley. In addition to getting to the hole at will, Gharram also knocked his outside shots down at will. Gharram is committed and signed to Yale and should be an impact player for them.
