Let’s take a look at five intriguing prospects from the match up.
Ish Leggett | St. John’s ’20
Leggett was just on another level in comparison to other players on the floor. The Rhode Island commit finished routinely around the rim whether or not there were bodies in the way. Leggett didn’t waste dribbles when he caught it on the perimeter. One or two dribbles to get his defender off balance and then it was straight to the rim for buckets. He led the Cadets’ balanced scoring attack with 13 points.
Christian Watson | St. John’s ’22
Watson has a tremendous frame for a wing at 6-foot-7 and displayed some nice versatility to go with it. There are still some areas he needs to patch up on, but being that he’s just a sophomore, he has plenty of time to do that. He guarded multiple positions throughout the game. Even guarding Samartine Bogues, a slithery 5-foot-5 guard for Calvert Hall, Watson was able to stay in front of him consistently. He also had an impressive one-handed dunk following a deflection that he caused on defense. Watson contributed 10 points in the win.
Amani Hansberry | St. John’s ’23
Hansberry is a boy in a man’s body. The 6-foot-7 freshman is a bullish presence in the paint and extremely active as a rebounder. He was effective altering any shots that came his way in the paint and did a nice job of keeping his leverage on the block. What impressed me even more was his willingness to run the floor on both ends. He was rewarded in the third quarter as he finished a two-handed lob to add insult to injury. Hansberry finished with 12 points.
Samartine Bogues | Calvert Hall ’23
Bogues still has a ways to go in terms of his decision making as a point guard, but there’s no denying his potential as an elite on-ball defender. At 5-foot-5, he’s a pest on the ball and his low center of gravity is difficult for the opposing guard to keep under wraps. Although his team trailed by a significant amount, his effort remained the same on that end and that speaks loudly considering he is a freshman.
John Square Jr. | St. John’s ’20
Square caught my eye right away with his willingness to communicate on both ends of the floor. As a defender, having someone like Square acting as the coach on the floor defensively calling out rotations is more valuable than any stat can indicate. He isn’t a main focal point for the Cadets offensively, but he was extremely efficient in picking his spots today. If there was a loose ball, he was the first one on the floor trying to secure it.
