These guards could break out, or are already decently known and will gain more traction. Either way, watch out for these ball handlers!
Kade Bafford (2021) | 6-0 PG | Newark
Bafford is a throwback guard that plays the position better than most. Newark gets literally everything out of their point guard as he can do it all. Tough as nails, Bafford is a willing defender that isn’t afraid to give up his body for loose balls, charges and everything in between. Handles the rock well on offense, absorbs contact around the rim and finishes. Consistent spot up shooter as well. Could very well be a stock riser this winter.
Jaiden Guice (2021) | 5-11 G | Westerville South
South will be young this year, with their top returning player being Guice. The junior will likely handle majority of the scoring, as expected. Guice works with or without the ball, a spot up left handed shooter that is also money off the dribble. Consistency in his jumper going forward will be big in his continued growth. South’s guard is good around the rim, using floaters and quick bunnies to get over the defender. An interesting prospect to keep an eye on this winter.
Casey George (2021) | 6-0 PG | Pickerington North
George will have an expanded role with the Panthers this winter. An all around point guard that does a little bit of everything. Solid defender that doesn’t give up much space and plays hard on-ball. The junior handles the ball well, doesn’t give it up, gets teammates involved. The ball doesn’t stick with him operating the offense. Capable shot maker off the bounce, including the mid range stop and pull that is money. Big fan of what George brings to Pick North and should see more of him this season.
James Netters (2021) | 5-10 PG | Marion Harding
Netters is one that many probably don’t know. Rightfully so that is, as he hasn’t had a ton of varsity time to date. But, I’ve been able to watch the junior multiple times and he will be plenty ready for a large role with the varsity team this season. Netters is a quick guard that can put the ball on a string and get the defender off balance. Most of his scoring comes off the bounce where he either blows by the defender or a quick step back. Quick player that pokes loose balls and creates transition opportunities for his team. Decision making with the basketball will be key, but Netters has the opportunity in front of him.
Carter Mims (2021) | 5-6 PG | Trotwood-Madison
The listed height is one that you have to look past. Mims makes up for his height with tough play and high energy. A pesky defender that gets after it, always looking to kick up opposing guards as well as create turnovers. Mims has quick acceleration that allows him to often get an extended finger role at the hoop. Sets up other teammates in the transition, does the dirty work, makes winning plays. The junior guard is definitely one coaches like.
