In this piece, we breakdown some players to watch in Division 3A based on research combined with what we’ve seen in person this fall.
Division 3A Players to Watch (Part I)
Preston Amarillo, Fountain Valley
Amarillo plays a point-forward type of roll for the Barons. His high basketball IQ, combined with his vision and passing ability, make him a tough defensive cover for most teams. The 6-foot-4 junior has good length which he uses to guard multiple positions defensively.
Roddie Anderson, Fountain Valley
Anderson is a dynamic athlete in transition. He has downhill and blow-by speed on the break and uses his strong frame to absorb and finish through contact. The 6-foot sophomore also uses his strength and lateral speed well on the defensive end to keep opposing guards out of the paint. The next step in Anderson’s development is to become a more consistent 3-point shooter.
Matthew Brookins, Westminster
Brookins is a strong, wide-bodied four man who has vastly improved his body and conditioning over the last couple of months and it has paid dividends with his game. At 6-6, 235 pounds, the senior uses his body to create space and can finish around the basket with either hand. Brookins has the ability to face-up at the mid-range level and drive by slower big men for paint touches and buckets.
Westminster power forward Matthew Brookins has improved his frame, which has lent to his improved game.Blake Cabrera, Wiseburn-Da Vinci
Cabrera is a long athletic wing who thrives in transition. At 6-feet-4, the senior uses his long strides to glide to the basket and finish over contact. Cabrera is also a consistent 3-point shooter with time and space.
Aden Casarez, Fountain Valley
Casarez is a knock-down 3-point shooter off the catch and is becoming a more consistent threat shooting on the move. The 6-foot-2 sophomore has also made strides with his ball handling which has resulted in an improved ability to create and get into the paint.
Nathan Clark, Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica
Clark is a smooth lead guard with a high IQ and ability to find a happy medium between scoring and distributing. The 6-foot-2 point guard has good length and plays with poise and good pace at the most important position.
Jeremiah Davis, Fountain Valley
Davis has a chance to lead the Sunset Conference in scoring with his ability to attack downhill in transition and knock down the stop-and-pop mid-range jumper. Davis has good size and athleticism at 6-2 and uses his change of speed and direction along with fundamental footwork to create space on the perimeter.
Dominic Escobar, Shadow Hills
Escobar is a high motor forward who can guard multiple positions, rebound in and out of his area and score both inside and out. The 6-foot-4 senior has touch out to 3-point range and can power through contact in the paint for high percentage buckets.
Jordan Fuller, Village Christian
The 5-foot-10 point guard is a big time athlete and playmaker in transition. Fuller can knock down perimeter jumpers off the bounce or use his change of speed to blow-by defenders and get into the paint and put pressure on the rim.
