In this piece, we breakdown some players to watch in Division 2A based on research combined with what we’ve seen in person this fall.
Division 2A Players to Watch
Elijah Evans, Dominguez
Evans is a versatile and high energy wing who makes things happen with his motor. The 6-foot-4 junior is a capable 3-point shooter, but prefers to slice his way through the paint and finish around the basket. Evans’ upper body strength allows him to absorb and finish through contact.
Caleb Hall, Peninsula
Hall is another big time energy player who brings toughness to both ends of the floor. Last season, the 6-foot-4 forward was more of an interior threat who did most of his offensive damage with put-backs and second chance opportunities, but this fall he has shown an improved perimeter skill-set when it comes to his shooting and ball-handling.
Barrington Hargress, Ribet Academy
The best way to describe Hargress’ game is that he’s an absolute animal. The 6-foot sophomore point guard has a strong frame, but doesn’t lack speed, especially when attacking the basket in transition. Hargress is very good at absorbing and finishing through contact while staying on balance to finish.
Trent Harper, Northwood
Harper is a spring board of an athlete. The 6-foot-5 forward has impressive ability to stay vertical on shot contests which lends to his ability to be a rim protector at his size. Harper not only blocks shots a respectable rate, but he also keeps the ball in play to give his team an extra possession.
Parker Hunt, Palm Springs
Hunt helped Palm Springs reach the CIF Southern Section Division 3A championship game last season where it lost to Capistrano Valley Christian. The 6-foot-7 big man is a good positional defender and rebounder and has soft hands with good footwork around the basket. Hunt averaged 17 points and eight rebounds a game as a junior.
Jaren Johnson, Lynwood
Johnson is one of the top unsigned wings in the 2020 class. At 6-feet-4, the senior has shot creating and shot making ability off the bounce whether its from 3-point range or to the rim. Johnson has the basketball IQ and passing ability to serve as a primary ball-handler and initiator of offense. He should end up at the mid-major level when all is said and done.
Kai Johnson, Oxnard
Johnson is a sleeper shooting guard in the 2020 class. The 6-foot-4 junior has a smooth shooting stroke with deep range. He’s not the fastest or most explosive athlete on the floor, but he uses change of speed and direction to get where he needs to go. Johnson helped Oxnard to 23 wins and an appearance in the Division 3AA semifinals a season ago.
