Though he didn’t make the Top 40 All-Star Game, Chase Duncan should not be discouraged. He is a young player with promise.
Duncan is a 5’7″+ combo guard. Combo is occasionally a sneaky way of calling a player who should be a point guard woefully inept at typical point guard skills like dribbling and passing. In Duncan’s case he is a combo guard because he can play both guard positions adeptly at the junior varsity level. Presumably, he will develop into a varsity player capable of playing on or off the ball. His shooting prowess and handle give him a unique versatility.
He gets into his shot very fluidly.
Wonderful lower body balance. Saunters like a young player who gets on the court constantly. You know how some players just move like the court is their second home? Chase is certainly familiar with the court and moves like a veteran in this very specific, casual way. It is a swagger that awkward or newer players don’t have.
Duncan is a capable shooter, both off the pull-up and from deep. His natural strength will improve as he ages through his teens, but the important thing is his touch and form are solid already. It takes a long time to develop touch. Some never do. I am looking at you Ben Simmons. The foundation for his shooting success throughout high school is a strong one.

Shooters and leapers don’t have a strong overlap in the basketball Venn’s Diagram. In fact, excellent leapers tend to want to leap. For whatever reason it seems that the most explosive players neglect the outside shooting, refuse to put in the time it takes to become an elite shooter. Chase Duncan is an anomaly this way because he can do both. He can get off the deck and he also puts in time as a budding shooter.
Columbia Academy is a prideful program, coming off a Class A State Championship.
