This is the status quo at my latest stop on my preseason tour, Calvary Christian. In this case, the Eagles might be eight or nine deep. Let’s break them down.
Who: Calvary Christian Eagles
Head Coach: Cilk McSweeney (7th year)
Last season: 15-11, lost to Chaminade-Madonna in 5A-District 13 semifinal.
Key players:
Greg Glenn – PF/So. 6-7,205: Glenn is already on the radar nationally, including with us here as he is listed as a top player in his class. Glenn is an all-around player with a knack for playing strong defense. Coach McSweeney described him in one-word…dominant. Florida, Florida State and Miami have already made offers to the young superstar. Expect many, many more to roll in. It is scary to think what he will be like as a senior. Averaged 14 points and nearly eight rebounds per game according to MaxPreps as a freshman.
Noah Tovar – PG/Jr. 6-4,180: Tovar is a play-maker who can get to the basket at will. The junior is explosive getting to the rim and loves to get his teammates involved. Speaking with him, he hopes to improve on his mid-range and patience this season. If he can do that, Calvary should have a fantastic player in the back-court. Averaged 8.6 points and three assists last season according to MaxPreps.
Matt Khoury – SG/Sr. 6-4,175: A catch-and-shoot type of player, Khoury will bring a lot of energy to this Eagles team. Khoury is looking to continue to work on his defense, which he credits has improved over his time at Calvary. According to Maxpreps, the senior averaged 7.4 points per game last season.
Sterling Young – G/Sr. 6-2,165: A transfer from New York, Young is an aggressive scorer who likes to get to the basket. While he can score on a dime, Young is looking to improve on his patience and letting the game come to him. Young just arrived to Calvary at the beginning of this school year so he might surprise some people in the area who have not seen him on the floor.
Dylan Canoville – SF/Jr. 6-5,215: Canoville is an athletic leaper with good size at his position. Canoville is a tough player who will create mismatches with his skill set. Look for him to have a big year as he becomes an upperclassmen this year.
Ladarian Variance – G/Sr. 6-4,195: Patient guard with a good jump shot. Variance is looking to add a consistent 3-pointer to his game this season. A part of a very deep group older guards who can catapult Calvary to a big season this year.
Player to watch: Carl Cherenfant – G/Fr. 6-5,185, Lian Lopez – W/Sr. 6-2,185 (transfer from Champagnat Catholic).
Outlook: As stated above, Calvary is deep with a solid mix of young and veteran players. If the Eagles continue to gel as the season progresses they could be in for a big season. McSweeney is looking for this team to play at a fast pace which should translate into an exciting form of basketball for fans in the area.
