Continue ReadingA lot of times you’ll see teams go zone to slow offenses down. It’s a good strategy and can be successful, however, there are some players that can shoot a team right out of that zone. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the top zone busters in Nevada.
Will McClendon 6’4 SG Bishop Gorman (#3 PHN 2021) – McClendon is the ultimate big-game hunter. The 6’4 wing seems to relish the big moments and can be counted on to knock down clutch shots. Gorman is a talented team and a zone defense seems like one of the only ways to slow them down. The problem is that with McClendon opposite of Noah Taitz, a zone is going to put defenses in a pick your poison situation.
Chancelor Johnson 6’2 SG Desert Pines (#12 PHN 2021) – One of the things that makes Johnson such an effective zone buster, is his favorite spot on the floor. Johnson loves to sink shots from the corners. Against most zones, these are the most vulnerable spots. Johnson plays alongside one of the best passers in the state, so if he’s open I expect him to get the ball.
Kobe Stroughter 6’1 PG Liberty (#14 PHN 2021) – Liberty is loaded with high-quality players including Gonzaga commit Julian Strawther and rising c/o 2022 post Joshua Jefferson. Defenses are going to be forced to neutralize them first. If that’s the case, then what do you do about Stoughter? The lefty has range out to the FIBA line and is comfortable spotting up or shooting it off the bounce. Because of Liberty’s size, I expect teams to try to pack it in and go 2-3. This should lead to some good looks for the lefty sniper.
Joseph Summers 5’11 PG Carson City –(#26 PHN 2021) – Summers makes this list as much for his IQ as his shot. Yes, he can shoot it, but it’s also his great recognition and understanding of defenses. That combination makes him lethal against zones. Summers knows how to identify and attack weaknesses. He has great patience and is willing to pass up a good shot for a great one.
Cimarron Conriquez 6’1 SG Desert Pines (#43 PHN 2021) – IMO Conriquez is one of the keys to a successful season for DP. He’s a natural shooter and when he gets hot, it makes it nearly impossible for defenses to defend them. Washington, Wiley, and Uzan should receive the majority of the focus, this is going to leave Conriquez left unattended and his ability to shoot teams out of their zones is going to open up space for those 3.
Kyle Slvanie 6’2 SG Boulder City (#55 PHN 2021) – Shooters shoot. If you haven’t seen Slvanie play, then don’t expect to see a kid that gets down for missing a couple of shots. Slvanie has no conscience and believes that everyone is going in. Reality of the matter is teams are going to have to zone Boulder City a lot becasue of Ethan Speaker and Matthew Morton, I’m guessing this is music to Slvanie’s ears.
