After going through the Summer grassroots session, our Top 250 Expo’s and local fall leagues, I have been fortunate to see a ton of players. Since we’re always focused on skill sets, it got me thinking. What players possess the best skills I’ve seen this year? This article is dedicated to those players. For the purpose of this article, this is only a list of players that I have personally seen play.
Best Shooter: Zac Triplett 6’6 SF Aussie Prospects 2020 – Over the course of 4 games this summer I watched the University of Portland Comitt burn up the nets.
Best Athlete: Jimma Gatwetch 6’4 SG Mudiay Elite 2020 – Duh! Click here to see some of his best dunks.
Best Perimeter Defender: Kenneth Simpson Jr 6’2 SG BTI Hoops 2021 (CA) – Physical fast lockdown defender with exceptionally quick hands.
Best Interior Defender: Moussa Cisse 6’9 PF Expression Elite 2021 (MA) – Strong interior precense willing to battle early in post-ups and disciplined enough to stay on his feet.
Best Rebounder: David Whatley 6’3 SF Bakersfield H.S 2020 (CA) – This man grabs every rebound when he is on the floor.
Best Versatility: Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa 6’3 SG Brookside Christian 2021 (CA) – Just take a look at his stat line from last season and then realize that he has a chance to be even better this year.
Best Passer: Daishen Nix 6’5 PG Trinity International 2020 (NV) – One of the best prep passers to come along in a while.
Best Rim Protector: Chet Holmgren 7’0 C Grassroots Sizzle 2021 (MN) – It’s funny watching people try to get their shot off over Holmgren. Yes, I realize he is a Youtube sensation for getting dunked on every now and then, but Chet just keeps coming back.
Best Scorer: Sebastian Mack 6’1 SG Durango H.S 2023 (NV) – Kid has the chance to be one of the all-time scorers at the high school level.
Best Upside: Jalen Washington 6’9 PF Meanstreets 2022 (IN) (featured image) – One of the best players in the C/O 2022 is also one of the youngest. Offers from the world, he won’t turn 16 until February.
Best Handle: Milos Uzan 6’3 PG Desert Pines 2022 (NV) – Savy handles with the ability to use all COD’s effectively.
Best Low Post Scorer: Vlad Salaridze 6’7 PF West Seattle 2020 (WA) – I watched this guy put on an absolute clinic at our Washington Expo. Soft hands and great footwork.
Best Driver: Jalen Suggs 6’5 PG Grassroots Sizzle 2020 (MN) – I’ve never seen anyone actually stay in front of Jalen Suggs in a game.
Best Physical Specimen: Jonathan Kuminga 6’8 PF Mudiay Elite 2021 – Just go look at him in person.
Best Undervalued Prospect: Jalen Williams 6’4 SG Dallas Showtyme 2020 – Played injured a lot during his Junior season. Lighting quick two-way player that impressed this summer for Dallas Showtyme.
Best Sleeper: Jaden Brownell 6’8 SF Utah Premiere 2021 – Someone please offer this man a scholarship. Versatile 6’8 wing that protects the rim and sprints the floor. Whatever school ends up getting him is going to have a player on their hands.
Best P&R Guard: Nolan Hickman 6’1 PG Seattle Rotary 2021 – Runs P&R offense like a 10 year NBA vet.
Best Under 6’0: Anthony Hunter 5’10 PG Las Vegas Knicks 2020 – Great run and jump athlete for his size. Elite perimeter defender.
Best Effort Player: Isaiah Gilliam 6’0 PG South Albany H.S 2021 (OR) – I will venture to say no one has ever heard of Gilliam. He may be the best-conditioned athlete in the country.
Best Grassroots Coach: Rick Jimenez Colorado Titans – Have to give some love to coach Jimenez and the Colorado Titans. All they did is go 30 – 4 this year and win the PrepHoops Hustle Region.
