Caylen Goff-Brown 2022 Tulsa Central guard
To his dismay, Caylen Goff-Brown was omitted from my earlier story on the top shooters in Tulsa. After seeing his play at the showcase, I admit that I was wrong in leaving his name off. Goff-Brown, though only a sophomore, was one of the most explosive shooters in the gym at the event. He’s a sure-fire, knockdown guy with top-notch accuracy and a lightning-quick release. He hit a hot streak on multiple occasions and yanked shots from far beyond the arc, giving defenders a difficult ultimatum — a pretty good chance to get burned for 3, or an even better chance to get blown-by for 2. Don’t sleep on CGB.
Trey Phipps 2020 Booker T. Washington point guard
The esteemed top shooter in the Sooner State, Trey Phipps, showed up to play Saturday at the showcase. The Oklahoma commit was nothing short of brilliant, pulling deep shots and taking quick strikes out of the dribble in transition. He burned the competition with strings of back-to-back-to-back shots more than once, placing the opposition in an impassible deficit — and that’s exactly what he’s going to do for the Hornets this season. This one was a no-brainer.
Kam Parker 2022 Booker T. Washington shooting guard
Kam Parker could be the breakout underclassman of the season for the Hornets this season if Saturday was any prelude. Stacked alongside one of the most dominant shooting back-courts in recent history (see above), Parker has the tools to benefit from the spacing he’s bound to receive. He can put the ball through the hoop at a high percentage from beyond the perimeter as well as the mid-range and has a smooth shot. He takes wise shots and has a few spots on the floor that he seemed unable to miss from.
Trentez Scales 2020 Norman point guard
Newcomer Trentez Scales, whose arrival at Norman was highly anticipated about Cleveland Co., showed why he should be one of the most dangerous additions to any team in the 2019-2020 season. He torched defenses on multiple occasions with first-class shooting skills — not to mention the confidence of a lion — from deep, deep range. On a stage that may have been overwhelming for others, Scales showed up big in a loss to Booker T. Washington, where the it seemed the entire city of Broken Arrow packed itself into the auxiliary gym to spectate.
Kalub Hunt 2020 Newcastle combo guard
Kalub Hunt electrified the Racers’ offense Saturday with ability to get red-hot from the arc. Hunt has a knack for stretching the defense far beyond its regular post with long shot selections. Luckily for Newcastle, he knows how to drain them. Hunt was terrific for the Racers on Saturday, and he set the precedent for what we can expect from his team this season. Returning as the leading scorer from 2018 with over 21 points-per-contest, Hunt will surely receive the green light rights from Newcastle coach Jessie Brown this year. It should be a fun season for Newcastle.
Parker Friedrichsen 2023 Bixby point guard
Bixby freshman Parker Friedrichsen could be one of the most exciting rookies in 2019, and the start to his freshman campaign was nothing short of indicative of the talent he brings to the court. Friedrichsen can swiftly size-up the basket, even on the move, before hitting spectacular shots from long range. He was good for two or three shots each 16-minute matchup Saturday. Few freshman have the confidence to pull difficult shots out of the dribble, let alone the skill to drain them, but Friedrichsen is no ordinary freshman.
