The Bobcats jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back to start the 2019-20 season with a 1-0 record.
An early wrinkle sets the tone
The Bobcats opened the game with Joyner initiating the offense at the point-forward spot, forcing the Pride to come out and defend him on the perimeter, opening up the floor and setting an early tone. Joyner finished the game with 17\6 points, nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks. The 6-foot-9 North Carolina A&T commit showed poise in his first game of the season and fed off 2020 guard Trent McIntyre‘s play to get the season-opening victory.
McIntyre finished the game with 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals, filling up the stat sheet for his squad. He showed off his versatility in a variety of ways as the glue guy for this squad as they kept their distance and got the victory in the end.
2022 forward Amare Miller was also impressive, putting together 12 points and six rebounds while battling foul trouble throughout the first half. He’ll be one to watch on a deep squad at Piedmont Classical.
Qualeem Poindexter was the X-Factor
Poindexter led the team in scoring with 24 points, cashing in four 3-pointers en route to the big win for the Bobcats. He put up 17 of his 24 points in the second half, creating some distance on the scoreboard and showing off his ability to create on the perimeter and off the dribble. He’s an intriguing 2020 prospect that should get some college looks as he builds off his strong opening game. He also had four steals on the defensive end.
Henderson Collegiate just has to adjust the little things
The Pride got 29 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals from 2020 Kalib Matthews and 15 points, three rebounds and three assists from 2021 Javonte Waverly but, things like missed free throws and turnovers proved to be their Achilles’ heel in their first game of the season. In total, Henderson Collegiate missed 17 free throws and turned the ball over 18 times in the loss. They got within nine points late in the game but the Bobcats turned things up a notch once again and gave them their first loss early on in the 2019-20 season.
