Continue ReadingThe Big North Conference was full of talent last season. They had eight teams finish with 20 or more wins, including three that finished with 25 or more. Bergen Catholic led the way with a record of 27-4 followed by Ramsey with 25 wins and a perfect 14-0 record in division play. Heading into the 2019-2020 season, there are some big time returning players in the Big North. Here are the main players to keep an eye on as the season gets closer.
Matt Zona (2020) | 6’9 C | Bergen Catholic
Zona led Bergen Catholic last season and is expected to do the same this year. The Notre Dame commit has the ability to play inside because of his size but can step out and knock down shots from deep. Zona’s range and versatility make him a complete matchup nightmare. A First-Team selection last season, Zona has a chance to not only repeat but he can become one of the best players in the conference.
Desean Lecque (2022) | 6’1 PG | Teaneck
An absolute pure scorer. Lecque was one of the top freshman in the state last season thanks to his wide skill set. What makes Lecque so unique is his ability to be an off-ball scorer at such a young age. With the ball in his hands, Lecque is a threat from deep and has a quick first step. Away from the ball, he is best known as a slasher who knows how to get to his spot on the floor. Teaneck is in good hands for the next three years with Lecque running the show.

There are certain players that show visible improvement year to year. Hansen is one of those players. As a freshman, he was still figuring out some of the detailed necessities of the game. As the years went on, he figured them out and is showing them in a big way. Hansen averaged 16.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a junior. Height is valued on a basketball court and there are many players blessed with it. What makes Hansen special is his flexibility and agility at his size. If Hansen continues to make improvements from junior to senior year, it could be a scary thing for the Big North.
Billy Klarmann (2021) | 5’10 PG | Northern Highlands
Size has been highlighted on this list but what about the undersized player with great skill? Enter Klarmann. Northern Highlands point guard is the leader of his team because of his incredible decision making. One would not know that Klarmann was a sophomore last season while watching his maturity on the floor. Rarely forcing, Klarmann would take open shots or set his teammates up in position to score. Whether it was from deep or taking contact inside the paint, Klarmann remained under control.
Or Sundjyevsky (2020) | 6’4 SG | Fair Lawn
One of three All-Division First Team members, Sundjyevsky and Fair Lawn are in for another big season. After finishing 22-4 last season, Fair Lawn will return their top three players. Sundjyevsky, along with John Burek and Darius Sohikish, are hungry for another season near the top of the Big North.
Myles Ruth (2020) | 6’1 PG | Don Bosco Prep
In his first season at Don Bosco, Ruth was an All-Division First Teamer. Ruth came over from Linden High School before his junior season and fit right in in the Big North. He was the leader of Don Bosco and will continue to be as a senior. Ruth’s dynamic play making ability energized his team and made them what they were, a 20 win team. The sky is the limit for Ruth and Don Bosco this season.
