Henderson Collegiate gets their first win of the season
After a four-game stretch of going winless to begin the 2019-20 season, the Pride got victory number 1 on the year behind big games from Kalib Matthews, Javonte Waverly and Akhiris Holden. Matthews finished with 16 points while Waverly and Holden anchored strong defensive efforts. Charles Kiah (2020) finished with 10 points, getting to the free-throw line quite a bit in the second half.
The Pride set the tone on defense and behind the arc
Henderson Collegiate opened the game aggressive on defense and thanks to a number of blocks and steals from Holden and Waverly, they opened the first quarter with 23-8 lead and three made 3-pointers from Matthews. The 3-point parade continued in the second half with two coming from Khris Franklin (2021) and one each from Jalen Burchett (2020) and Kaleb Royster (2021).
Holden’s big dunks steal the show
Akhiris Holden had just eight points in the game but four of them came on big dunks that gave his team some early energy. His first dunk came on a backdoor cut that gave him space to sky for a two-handed jam. His second one came on an in-bounds play under his own basket where he caught an alley-oop and flushed it with authority. He’s slowly emerging as a solid two-way threat for Henderson Collegiate.
Sheick Samoura back but still recovering from injury
Sheick Samoura, No. 13th ranked player in the PrepHoops NC 2021 Rankings, is back on the hardwood but he still looked a bit labored from his injury. He finished with 13 points in the Tigers second loss of the 2019-20 season and got to the free throws a few times, showing flashes of his potential, but he was no match for Henderson Collegiate’s relentless pressure.
Abdul-Hakim and Gordon make up quite the backcourt
The Tigers backcourt was made up of Emmanuel Gordon and Junaid Abdul-Hakim and the senior guards did well battling on the boards and competing until the very end. Gordon didn’t let his 5-foot-7 stature stop him from getting offensive boards and to the free-throw line. He finished with a team-high 14 points in the game. Abdul-Hakim finished with six points and left some free throws on the board down the stretch.
