Today we highlight some of the best defenders in the 2021 class. Prospects could specialize in perimeter or post defense, we will be covering both styles of defense.
DaRon Holmes 6’9 2021 F Millennium
Holmes is a great defender, both on the perimeter and in the post. He has a natural sense for the ball and can easily turn away shots in a moments notice. I’ve seen Holmes put up double digit block totals in the past and wouldn’t be shocked if he continued that trend. What makes Holmes such an amazing shot blocker is his height, athleticism, his wingspan, timing, and know how.
Ky Oliver 6’4 2021 G PHH Prep
I love Ky Oliver on the perimeter. If I was his coach, I’d put him on any team’s best scorer to slow them down. Oliver brings a toughness and grittiness to any team he is on. He is a straight dawg! He loves to pressure his opponent and get up close and personal. Oliver has a little bit of Gary Payton in him as he loves to talk a bit and get inside his opponent’s head. As a huge fan of that style of defense and GP, I am a big fan of Oliver’s defense.
JJ White 6’3 2021 G Ironwood
Another guy you can stick on the opposing team’s best scorer is JJ White and that is just what Ironwood does. JJ may not be the athlete that Oliver is but JJ White has the basketball IQ to make up the difference and guard anybody on the perimeter. He has a very good feel for his opponent and studies their moves. White seems to always be one step ahead of his opponent.
JT Elder 6’6 2021 G/F Cienega
Elder is a ridiculous athlete and incredibly tough to score on. If you’re matched up across court from this guy, good luck scoring the ball! Elder stands at 6’6 and has an incredible wingspan. Elder is also very quick and nimble on his feet. Most players that size get pushed into the post but Elder has played a ton of guard in his career so he is used to being out on the perimeter.
