Now, I’m looking into Class A and AA.
This list is small as I found five players to watch in 2019. Of course, this list is going to increase as the season progresses, and I will surely revisit this story and provide an update.
As of right now, based off the players I have seen in open gym thus far, I have a quick-to-the-point piece on who I think will be the unsung heroes for their teams this upcoming season.
Here’s the list:
RJ Berkley, MAHS: The 6-foot-2 senior combo guard will probably be one of the top scorers in Class A. He can knock down shots from the 3-point line. Berkley has nice ball handles, and he gets to the lane with ease. Last season, Berkley forced a lot of shots. He will not have to do that this season as head coach Vernard Watkins has talent all over the floor.
David Dixon, MAHS: The 6-8 forward has improved since leaving Briarcrest. Many have yet to see him play since he’s at a school many people aren’t paying attention to. Dixon can handle the basketball and can shoot from the perimeter. He runs the floor exceptionally well and Watkins allows the kid to play free. The shackles are officially off Dixon, and people will see how special this kid is. This season will be a coming out party for the junior.
Kelvin Campbell, Westwood: Campbell is a freshman and is one of head coach Chris Adams’ best players. Campbell is only 5-7, but he’s going to be a problem in Class A because of his ball handling and scoring ability. Coach Adams will need Campbell to be big on the offensive end every night. He could open some eyes in his first year on varsity.
Phillip Horton, Fayette Ware: Horton can shoot from long range. I had a chance to see him in open gym last week. I saw him over the summer on the AAU circuit playing for Memphis Showtime 17U. At 6-5, Horton can play both guard positions. He will not have to do all of the work as he’s surrounded with players that are humbled, but Horton’s shooting will be huge for the Wildcats in Class AA.
Johnathan Duncan, Wooddale: Last season, Duncan knocked down big shots for the Cardinals during their Class AA state title run. He’s going to be one of the veterans on this season’s team with championship experience. Duncan will be playing alongside junior guard Jalen Brown and junior guard/forward Johnathan Lawson. The offense will go through those two, but Duncan will be asked to contribute when Lawson and Brown see double teams or when one of the two struggles offensively. Duncan may not be a household name, but he’s going to play a huge part in Wooddale repeating.
