Here were some of the most impressive underclassmen from the event:
Ty Murphy, Harrisburg, S.D., 2023
Murphy’s basketball smarts stood out throughout the day, as he played with a great motor and consistently made good decisions. His floor game was solid, as he passed the ball well, set screens and cut and balanced making plays with staying active away from the play.
Mubarak Ibrahim, SF Roosevelt, 2022
Ibrahim was one of the most explosive guards on the floor this weekend, routinely using his quickness and speed to beat first-row defenders and get into the paint. He’s not the biggest guy, but if given a runway, he can generate enough elevation to finish at the rim even against opposing bigs. When locked in on the defensive end, he showed he can be a positive for his team getting stops and when he gets in transition, he’s a nightmare to try staying in front of.
Lucas Lorenzen, Okaboji, Iowa, 2022
Lorenzen was one of the most impressive players at the event Sunday, showing an ability to pile up points in a variety of ways. He’s 6-foot-2ish but plays with a tenacity and energy that wears opponents out. He showed an ability to knock down 3-pointers but he’s at his best slashing and finishing in traffic. He also did a really nice job playing without the ball and either rim-running, screening or cutting off the ball. And his ability to rebound and compete against bigger guys was impressive.
Connor Sauvage, Douglas, S.D., 2022
Sauvage looked really good running his team’s offense, using tight handles and impressive change in speeds to get to spots on the floor where he could either get his own shot off, or get the ball to his teammates with opportunities. He’s extremely shifty and showed a quick release with deep range, and was predictably a nightmare to try to defend in ball screen actions.
Byiza Ntozo, West Fargo, N.D., 2022
Ntozo showed some serious 3-and-D ability Sunday, knocking down several 3-pointers while using his length and athleticism to disrupt just about anybody he defended. He’s 6-foot-2 and has long arms and quick hands. He didn’t gamble a lot and did a good job staying in front of guys and contesting shots. His outside shot looks smooth and he’s got the ability to get his shot off with minimal space.
