Here were some of the best rebounders from the event:
Gavin Terhark, 2020, Brandon Valley, S.D.
Terhark is a savvy rebounder, using his length and understanding of positioning to frustrate opposing bigs on the glass. He always seemed to either collect a rebound in traffic or get a hand on a loose ball to tip it to a teammate despite being boxed out or against quicker or taller guys.
Caden Johnson, 2020, Minot, N.D.
Johnson is an explosive 6-foot-9 big man who can really dominate on the glass. He’s a little raw when it comes to overall team defense, but when he commits to gobbing up rebounds and rim-running, he’s a really intriguing player.
Mason Steele, 2020, Stevens, S.D.
Steele was arguably the best rebounder at the event Sunday, as he’s 6-foot-8 with mobility, strength and explosiveness. He rebounded well in and out of his area, and has vice-grips for hands. When he was in position to collect a board, nobody else had a chance. His strength allows him to maintain position underneath to fight for offensive rebounds and his range on defense made it so that he could contest shots in the paint and then get to rebound opportunities.
Jerry Deng, 2022, SF Washington, S.D.
Deng is an impressive young player and he showed he can impact the game beyond simply putting up points. He’s an athletic rim-runner who does a good job using his body to shield opposing bigs on the glass and his ability to pursue long misses helped end possessions or extend offensive ones.
Cody Brown, 2020, Madison, S.D.
Brown is a thickly-built kid who uses his strength to control the paint. He isn’t the most explosive leaper, but his strength allows his clear out space and rebound his area at a high rate. He’s smart about when he can get after the offensive glass and is always in good position to get his hands on loose balls.
Mason Gravseth, 2021, Grand Forks Central, N.D.
Gravseth isn’t the tallest or most explosive guy on the court but he plays with a hot motor and seems to have a great understanding of positioning and timing. He doesn’t just body guys up and push his way under the rim for rebounds. He has a good sense of when to make contact on people, when to work different leverages and when to attack the offensive glass.
