Here were some of the most impressive juniors from the event:
Carson Lamp, Jamestown, N.D.
Lamp was one of the most impressive players in the event Sunday, showing the ability to create for himself and for his teammates while also excelling off the ball as a cutter or spot-up guy. Lamp is known as a solid perimeter shooter but he was really good slashing to the paint, drawing defenders and finishing through contact or finding teammates for easy shots. He competed on the defensive end too, challenging himself with some of the top perimeter players on opposing teams and doing well.
Justice Coleman, Bismarck Century, N.D.
Coleman’s a breakout candidate in North Dakota this year for a team that is consistently one of the best in the state. He’s an athletic combo-forward who can shoot, defend, make plays and rebound. His basketball IQ showed through and it’s clear that he’s coming from a well-run program. But he’s also got the physical skills to do just about everything well on the court.
Jace Kelly, Cutser, S.D.
Kelly is just kind of the definition of solid. He impacted games in a variety of ways, shooting the ball extremely well from deep, showing a little bit of juice as a shot-creator, contributing as a rebounder and defending competently. He’s got good size and length for a swingman and plays a cerebral style that allows him to fit in on a team full of strangers but also make plays organically.
Garrett Kolbeck, Tea, S.D.
Kolbeck looks like he’ll assume a much bigger role this winter with Tea. He looked up to the task Sunday, showing off a beautiful outside shot, explosiveness to the rim and a great understanding of spacing and how to play on and off the ball.
Deonte Martinez, Minot, N.D.
Martinez is an explosive, twitchy guard who is at his best with the ball in his hands, breaking down defenders and scoring in traffic. At times, he can get a little tunnel-visioned but when he’s going well, he’s a really good passer and does a great job balancing finding his shot with setting teammates up. Defenders have a hard time staying in front of him. His competitiveness on the defensive end isn’t always consistent, but when he’s locked in, he showed the ability to be a menace on the ball.
Jabril Muktar, SF Washington, S.D.
Muktar is short, but the stuff he’s good at is stuff that can’t really be coached and the stuff he needs to improve on, can be developed. He’s a grinder on both ends of the court, defending with an energy few other guys put forth and his ability to push the tempo made life for his teammates a lot easier. He’s excellent at getting into the paint, breaking down first-row defenders and appears comfortable handling the ball in tight spaces.
