Garvin Clarke (2020) | 6-0 PG | Cleveland Heights
Clarke’s IQ is off the charts, first of all. He anticipates passes before they happen, leading to either steals or him being right on time to play on-ball defense. Able to change directions on a dime and slide feet with speed. Quick hands. Compact body able to absorb contact.
Amarion Dickerson (2021) | 6-6 SF | Rhodes
Dickerson is one of two players in Ohio who will be named a Top Perimeter Defender and Top Rim Protector in his area. (The other being Jamiya Neal in Northwest Ohio.) The defensive maven has immense length and athleticism that he uses to stay in front of guys. Even if he gets beat after attacking a closeout, Dickerson is athletic enough to recover and block a shot. Can’t shoot over him.
Montorie Foster (2020) | 6-1 PG | St. Edward
Impact defender at the point of attack with lateral quickness and sneaky hands. Foster is also extremely tough and competitive. He brings an edge to the game. Constantly active and in position.
Sencire Harris (2022) | 6-5 PG | St. Vincent-St. Mary
Harris has all the tools to be a good defender at the highest level of college basketball. He’s a premier recruit because of his size at the point guard position and quick-twitch muscle. Part of his defensive brilliance is how impactful he is in transition defense. Harris is remarkably fast in the open floor, therefore able to jump passing lanes that lesser athletes wouldn’t even dream of attacking. Closes the gap in a hurry, too.
Luke Howes (2020) | 6-0 PG | Fairview
Howes is in the other point guard’s hip pocket all day. His physical and aggressive defensive style resulted in 3.5 steals per game last season. Takes a lot of chances in passing lanes and in reaching-in for the ball. Able to read his man very well when defending the ball. Good hands. Compact, powerful build.
Chris Livingston (2022) | 6-5 SG | Buchtel
Livingston is a world-class athlete. Beyond the raw ability, though, he’s truly an excellent ballplayer at this early stage. That basketball acumen includes defense, where Livingston plays with picture-perfect positioning and knows how to use his athletic edge. Very active arms when it comes to contesting shots. He can stay in front of pretty much anyone. Elite speed.
Caleb Piks (2020) | 6-4 SG | Mentor
Outside shooting is at a premium. And it’s the first thing that stands out about Piks’ game. When you settle in and start observing Piks closer, though, it’s his defensive tenacity and active legs that separate him from other shooters. Very quick and competitive kid who fights screens. He stays in front to contest shots. Tremendous rebounder. Physical.
Chase Toppin (2020) | 6-1 G | St. Ignatius
Toppin possesses dynamic speed and the ability to change directions. Toppin, who has a very solid build, doesn’t budge when someone lowers the shoulder — which allows him to not only stay in front but also contest shots with a high hand after contact. Good team defender, too, when it comes to being in position and communicating.
Jonah Waag (2021) | 6-2 G | VASJ
Waag places a priority on the defensive end. Very good in situations against the other team’s best players where Waag can lock-in to focus on defending one particular guy. He drapes those go-to scorers like a shut-down cornerback. Waag is a fast kid who is very comfortable playing up-tempo. Able to change directions without breaking stride with choppy steps. Good size.
Seth Wilson (2021) | 6-1 PG | Lorain
Wilson’s strength advantage against guards is through the roof. He doesn’t react to their attempts to be physical, meanwhile he can bump guys all day without tiring. Wilson is also laterally quick and plays on the balls of his feet. Great rebounder. Terrific length. Plays with confidence.
