Guess what, though, they’re giving scholarships for kids that get it done on the boards, too. After all, a good defensive possession is worthless unless it’s completed. Conversely, the top rebounders routinely turn an ugly possession into two points with their combination of will and physical power.
Alphabetically, here are our top 10 men of the glass in Central Ohio:
VonCameron Davis (2020) | 6-5 SF | Walnut Ridge
The future Kent State Golden Eagle was second in the area in rebounds (11.6) and points (27.5) last season, trailing only a pair of 2019 graduates. Davis is what they call poised for a good season.
He pairs a lean frame with speed. Actively tracks down rebounds all over the floor. Good second jump. His scoring and rebounding often go hand in hand, too, as Davis is Columbus’s king of put-backs.
Tyrese Hughey (2021) | 6-7 F | Thomas Worthington
First of all: athleticism. Hughey is a freak athlete. He explodes off the ground while possessing a strong body, fluidity, and long arms. Second: motor. The kid plays extremely hard. He runs the floor and crashes the glass. Finally, a bonus: situation. As new teammates Jalen Sullinger and Isaac Settles collapse the defense on their drives, Hughey is scariest possible figure on mop up duty after not being boxed out.
Luke Lachey (2020) | 6-7 F | Grandview Heights
Lachey is an Iowa football commit that could’ve landed at a mid-major basketball program if he went that route. Mobile forward with power and leaping ability. His hands will be utilized at tight end for the Hawkeyes, a skill that translates to catching basketballs in traffic.
Cole Metzler (2020) | 6-4 C | Canal Winchester
Metzler illustrates the value of a second jump. He’s a high-motor rebounder who keeps possessions alive for second- and third-chance opportunities. Plays with constant energy in the low-post. He should be over 10 per game this season after going for 9.5 as a junior.
Brandon Noel (2020) | 6-8 C | Chillicothe
Noel has a wide frame and is quicker to the ball than other players with his size. Active rebounder. Threat to score it off the offensive glass. Good athlete off the floor.
Marcus Peaks (2020) | 6-4 C | Watkins Memorial
Peaks combines a long, strong frame with a terrific motor. Out-hustles taller post players to get into position or win 50-50 scrambles. He has terrific lift off the floor, which also allows him to change shots. Averaged 10.3 rebounds last season.
Jack Pugh (2020) | 6-5 F | Bradley
Pugh is an elite athlete whose energy on the glass could strike fear in an opponent. The chiseled combo forward flies around the paint to track down rebounds outside of his area. Explosive off the floor. Relentlessly chases down loose ball rebounds, too.
Kaveon Ross (2020) | 6-5 PF | Walnut Ridge
If teammate VonCameron Davis doesn’t secure it, there’s a good chance the ball is in Ross’s hands. Thick-bodied athlete with impressive leaping ability. Plays with an edge and doesn’t care who is in his way on a contested board. Good hands.
Jack Sawyer (2021) | 6-5 PF | Pickerington North
ESPN.com’s no. 2 rated football prospect nationally is a handful in the paint. Sawyer will likely be paid the big bucks one day to shed 300-pound offensive tackles in the NFL, so a 17-year-old forward doesn’t have much of a shot. He also has elite hands.
Javan Simmons (2022) | 6-5 C | Bishop Hartley
We think Simmons is going to be the face of this category for Central Ohio in a few years. He’s a relentless rebounder with a strong, thick body. Simmons plays with an edge and can move people with his strength. Plus length, too. Impressive second jump.
