NBA Stylistic Comparison: 2019 Bulls Daniel Gafford
College Projection: NAIA.
Wilson is a 6’3″+ wing forward with potential to grow and mature into a college basketball player. Keep in mind, Wilson is yet to attend his first high school class. There are years between his college entrance. Still, Wilson is plucky with a soft touch and better than average feet.
His handle was not the best in tight spaces. Typically, taller players take longer to develop their coordination on the basketball. Judging by the combine alone, Toby Wilson is on a promising path. The handles are not problematic, rather they lack the desired crispness. This can change with hard work.
When Toby gets in close he creates problems for defenders. His touch around the rim makes him difficult to guard for lesser varsity players now. Imagine how crafty and springy the maturing forward can become. He posted a nice 25″ vertical. The lane agility speed hovered around 12.5 +/- 0.3 seconds, which indicates that Wilson can evolve into a two-way wing player.
Early in his musculature development, Wilson is investing in fitness and all-around strength. The legs are nimble if not a little spry. Defending the wing will be challenging in his first 1-2 years of high school basketball, but he projects as a taller wing in time. Though Toby is very likely to play center or post with his middle school, the talented young man would be better served training on ladders, plyometrics, sprints in his personal training. Who knows how tall he will grow, but agility is enormously important to a player of his skills and size.
Wilson looks lighter on his feet than most young forwards. He has implemented some rudimentary post moves like pump faking and stepping through. These are expertly used already. His balanced attacking game will benefit from incorporation of more post moves, obviously.
Weaknesses are few. The frame to this picture is sturdy and complete. By investing time and selecting wise coaches Toby Wilson will succeed as a varsity hooper and beyond.
