This was an opportunity for me to get a look at some prospects from this part of Nor Cal. This fall event featured Sheldon High, last years Nor Cal Open Champs. These five 2020 prospects earned some recognition with their solid play from this event.
Miles Lewis 6’0 2020 Pt Guard Sacramento High
He plays with controlled intensity with exceptional quickness and speed with the ball in his hands. He has all the moves required to be an effective point guard, including a stop-n-go, and the hesitation. He knocked down his mid-range shot all day, and his ability to attack the basket and finish with either hand was quite effective. He’s hard to contain when he’s pushing the ball in open court, he has good vision and often found open shooters with his good passing. Speed and quickness allows him to be a solid on ball defender.
Jordan Johnson 6’6 2020 Weston Ranch (Stockton Ca)
Jordan has a solid body that jumps out at you, and he uses it pretty good on the court. From what I’ve seen so far he’s most effective around the basket. He’s a good receiver in the post area with balance and foot work, he can face you up and take you off the dribble, he will convert most of the time. He runs the floor pretty good and finishes with a dunk on occasion. He goes all out for the rebound and put back.
Dontrel Hewlett 6’4 2020 Sheldon (Sacramento Ca).
Hewlett is a rising prospect. He showed his potential this past weekend in Sacramento. He’s going to be a key contributor for the Nor Cal Open Champs. He scores points within the flow of the offense. He scored on 3’s from the corner, he took his man off the dribble, and he likes to get out in the open court where he can show his athleticism, he had strong finishes including dunks.
Darrin Tobias 6’6 2020 Sheldon (Sacramento Ca).
Prospects improve if they put in the work, Tobias is one of those prospects. He has extended his game beyond the post area. Last season he had good foot work, finished well around the basket, and he was very effective attacking from the baseline off the dribble. This season, he’s added a mid-range shot with good form that he makes. He’s got bounce and he bring energy to the court and he can guard multiple positions if needed. Put it all together and he’s a solid prospect to keep an eye on.
Pierce Davis 6’8 2020 Sheldon Sacramento Ca).
There’s a reason why Sheldon is a top program, prospects know they have to improve their game if they want to get on the floor. Davis along with Tobias played for MB3. A (Bagley Sacramento Kings Rookie) Puma sponsored team that played quality competition throughout the summer. Davis has bulked up a bit, and he’s put in a lot of work on the perimeter learning how to get to the basket. He’s not a knock down shooter, but he becomes more of an offensive threat if he starts to knock down that mid-range, and high post jumper with some consistency. He can guard out on the perimeter and he will block shots and rebound.
