The annual Big Nine preview is today and we start with some familiar items, but also some changes in the Rochester area.

Top Ten in State: Mankato East, Austin

The Cougars will enter the season the third ranked team in Class AAA while Austin will start the year ranked fourth in the class.  Both are the favorites in their section although East will get a much stiffer challenge from Marshall and St. Peter than Austin will get from anybody in their group. Why East over Austin?  East and Austin split the Big Nine title last year but East won the second game.  They also get the slide edge over the Packers because the Cougars have more coming back and they beat Austin a couple times this summer.   There is a solid chance that one of these teams will be playing Minnehaha Academy in the state title game although they will have to go through DeLaSalle first. 

Potential Top Ten:  Rochester Mayo

Mayo looked like a top ten team last year, and then had the week from hell in February (0-4).  Things fell apart from
