While several teams at all levels have begun to embrace small ball, having a skilled big man on the roster can end up making a huge difference. I got to see some talented post players this past Sunday at the Texas Top 250 Expo. Here are four bigs who impressed me:
Colbie Holiman – 2020 6’8 Power Forward/Center Red Oak HS – This was my pick for the all-expo team. Holiman is built like an NFL left tackle. He is strong in the post and displayed the ability to finish with both hands. He has a soft touch in the paint and knows how to establish himself down low. Holiman is also a deceptively good interior passer.
Nyk Madison – 2020 6’5 Power Forward Midlothian HS – Madison is a really long and athletic player in the post. His athleticism makes up for the size he gives up down low. He can run the floor in transition and finishes the break with powerful dunks. Additionally, he can stretch out to the perimeter and hit an open three.
Thyrell McCline – 2020 6’7 Power Forward/Center Randolph HS – McCline is a shot-blocking machine. He had several impressive blocks during his time at the expo. He can get it done on offense. McCline can finish through contact in the paint and is an excellent free throw shooter. I also love the way he crashes the glass at both ends.
Jacob Stuckey – 2020 6’8 Power Forward Burleson Centennial HS – Stuckey thrives in pick and roll and pick and pop situations. He sets good screens and rolls hard to the rim. I liked seeing him finish above the rim with two-handed dunks. Stuckey also possesses enough athleticism and lateral quickness to hold his own defensively out on the perimeter.
