Houston has plenty of other types of “Super Soakers” though. “Super Soakers” describes players that are “wet” almost every time they shoot the ball. Regardless of the level, every good team needs a good shooter. So let’s take a look at some players that excels in that area of the game.
Jakoby Flores
5’9 PG | St Thomas Episcopal High School | Class of 2021
BIG THINGS CAN COME IN SMALL PACKAGES
For what Jakoby lacks in height he makes up for with an incredible knack to score the ball. If you give him an inch, he will make you pay. He has a quick trigger and unlimited range which makes him an instant threat as soon as he crosses half court. In addition to his shooting, Jakoby finds ways to contort his body in traffic to score in the paint.
Ethan Yancy
6’4 SG | Bush High School | Class of 2020
BIG GUARD, LONG RANGE
Ethan is a pretty big guard at this level. His ability to shoot from long range opens things up for him when he wants to penetrate. He can finish in traffic, he’s athletic enough to finish at the rim and all of this complements his great shooting ability. Ethan does a great job of getting to his spots. And regardless of if he is contested or not, he makes a high percentage of his threes.
Jake Arnold
6’2 PG | Katy Taylor High School | Class of 2021
JAKE “THE SNAKE” ARNOLD
Okay, so that’s not really his nickname, but still, Jake is always ready to strike and from anywhere. Long range, mid range, close to the rim, it doesn’t matter. Jake can score on all three levels but it all begins with his outside shooting ability. He can shoot off the dribble, going both directions and also shoot off of screens. Transitioning into a PG role should see him get more opportunities to score this upcoming season.
Hunter Betke
6’3 SG | Cinco Ranch High School | Class of 2022
YOUNG, LONG AND TALENTED
I have been a bit surprised to see that Hunter is more than a spot up shooter. Yeah, he can absolutely spot up and shoot, but recently he has shown the ability to pass the ball effectively as well. He moves well around the floor, makes good decisions, plays hard and never plays outside of himself. Just a sophomore, it will be interesting to see how he expands his game.
LJ Cryer
6’2 PG | Morton Ranch High School | Class of 2020
NO INTRODUCTION NEEDED
If you claim to follow high school basketball in the Houston area and haven’t heard of LJ Cryer, just stop. This kid is incredible. Committed to Baylor, Cryer is an elite shooter that combines that ability with his wizardly dribbling ability. He has added some weight over the summer so now he can also use his body to create space. And that is the LAST thing opposing teams should want to give him If you have a chance to watch this kid play, I would strongly recommend that you do so.
Jacob Harvey
5’11 PG | Hargrave High School | Class of 2021
NO RELATION TO STEVE
And there is nothing funny about Jacob’s game. Deceptively quick, Jacob finds creative ways to free up space to get his jumper off. Additionally, he dictates tempo well which works hand in hand with his vision and passing ability. Jacob picks his spots to take over games with his scoring. However, he can take over games in other ways as he enjoys getting teammates involved just as much as he likes to shoot.
