We’re taking a look at five players who could be the best in the league for each team, regardless of team. A conference to definitely watch for.
First Team:
Darius Parham (6’2” / WG 2021 / Bishop Ready): A shooting guard as the one in this lineup, but conference teams should be the five best players. Parham is a guy that finds himself open for a ton of jumpers and takes advantage. Smooth jump shot when he gets set. Lengthy player that helps him on the glass and at the defensive end. Expect a big year from Parham. Slept on player to say the least.
Jared Frey (6’4” / WG 2022 / St. Charles): Easy pick for player of the year in the CCL is Jared Frey. Top returning scorer in the league, who is only a sophomore. Frey is surrounded by even more talent then last season that should do him and his team a big favor. Expect to see a jump from 17 points a game as a freshman into the twenties. A matchup problem that is just to big and skilled for other guards, as he can fill it up all over. If Frey adds some more explosiveness there wouldn’t even be a thought of being able to stop him. Versatile player.
Desmond Watson (6’4” / F 2021 / DeSales): Maybe the toughest matchup in this conference. Watson is to shifty and elusive for forwards to guard him, and to big for a guard to matchup with him. Can get to the rack and finish at a high clip. When he catches it at the elbow it’s game over. Watson will be that guy for DeSales this season and could see a big spike in production.
Joshua Whiteside (6’6” / PF 2022 / St. Charles): Not a whole lot of action at Gahanna his freshman year and now attends St. Charles. Whiteside won’t play with a point guard to the level of Sean Jones, but he’ll be surrounded by as much pure talent. The dream scenario is the sophomore at the four and Searls at the five. Not many teams would compete with St. Charles on the inside, if any. One of the class of 2022’s better bigs is a defensive menace and can erase shots at the rim. Can handle the ball better than expected and work off the dribble. This season could be a breakout season for the sophomore who already holds a Divison l offer.
Victor Searls (6’7” / C 2020 / St. Charles): Searls was second team all-conference last year but I see him as a prime target for first team this winter. With another solid big in the lineup teams won’t be able to key in on Searls if that’s the lineup they decide to roll with. A soft touch from anywhere in the paint and capable to score it from the midrange. Has some post moves in his bags that are tough to guard at the prep level. Underrated big in the 2020 class.
Second Team:
Derrick James – St. Charles
Kobe Righter – DeSales
Spencer Martin – St. Charles
Garrison Budd – Bishop Ready
Davis Boone – Bishop Watterson
