Now, it’s time to compile a list of the preseason All-MOAC team and others who are in for big seasons!
Also, other thoughts to the league. An interesting season of Hoops is so close we can feel it!
All-MOAC:
Griffin Shaver (6’1” / G 2021 / Ontario): Griffin Shaver was the best shooter in the MOAC last year and one of the purest scorers. The Ontario guard is a coach on the court and will be the top man for the Warriors once again this season. Money from range, but also has the skill to finish inside. Active two-way player that gets after it on both ends, everything a coach wants. Expect the junior to be near the top of the league in points and potentially steals. Shaver can play the one or two, but will handle the rock majority of the time for Ontario.
Isaiah Alsip (6’0” / G 2020 / Galion): The most athletic player in the league without a doubt is Alsip. As a junior he led the MOAC in scoring and steals. Quickness on the defense end often has the guard out in transition for an easy bucket. Crafty with the ball in his hands, Isaiah can score it from all over, as well as stop on a dime. Above average shooter from deep his shot has the ability to carry his team as it often does. Galion may not be one of the better teams on paper, but they definitely have one of the better prospects.
Brennan South (6’0” / G 2020 / Clear Fork): They say shooters shoot and that’s exactly what Brennan South does. Last year South filled it up at times while netting 14.9 points a game. Clear Fork won the league last year, but lost a lot from that team. They will play through South this year who is a legit guard prospect. Smooth scoring game that can really sink a team if he catches fire. I like the quickness on ball he brings on both ends too. One of the better prospects in the MOAC.
Mitch Myers (6’3” / W 2020 / Marion Harding): Marion Harding has been down since 2017 when they last won the MOAC, but they return quite a bit of experience. That starts with senior Mitch Myers who will be their leading scorer more than likely. Around 11 points as a junior, Myers was the Presidents best player. Not a typical basketball build, more like a linebacker, which he is pretty darn good at. An inside out game where he is capable from both. Money from the spot up deep ball that he gets open for quite often. Look for the senior to have a solid year for Harding.
TJ Pugh (6’5” / WF 2021 / Shelby): My pick for MOAC player of the year is TJ Pugh. As a newcomer to Shelby last season he was one of the top scorers in the league as well as rebounders. Gone from Shelby is Uriah Schwemley which opens up stats to be picked up. In the off-season the junior Pugh was impressive on the grassroots level. He has gotten stronger, improved ball handling and his shot is coming along. It’s possible that as a junior TJ leads the league in scoring and rebounding, a double double threat every night. The interesting thing is he’ll handle the ball a ton, versatile player to say the least.
All Mention:
Cody Lantz – G Shelby
Ethan Bell – G River Valley
Dylan Johnson – WG River Valley
Tabias Thompson-Reece – G Marion Harding
Shaquan Coburn – G Ontario
Cohl Ambrose – WG Pleasant
Checking Out:
The MOAC is wide open this year, multiple teams lost a lot! Also, some teams bring back a ton. But, there’s no clear favorite this coming winter. This could be a good thing as competition should be at a high level.
