This year’s contest was moved to Cal State University of Los Angeles in preparation of its high octane matchups and stars. The first half of the day included matchups from La Canada vs. Loyola, St. John Bosco vs. Long Beach Poly, and Colony vs. Harvard Westlake. Prep Hoops looks at the standout players from those games:
Kylan Boswell (Colony HS, 2023, PG)
The electric Boswell was a spark plug for Colony. Boswell is an exciting combo guard who plays on both sides of the floor. He has a smooth handle and can create space or get into the lane. He flashes signs of being a superstar, often hitting shots that you would not expect from an incoming freshman, including several over the bigger Truman Gettings and Mason Hooks. On defense he does a great job of reading defenders and playing passing lanes. Boswell finished with 18 points.
Denim Dawson (Colony HS, 2021, Wing)
The work put in this summer is evident. Dawson has shows improved ball handling, decision making, and a steady jumper. He had his offensive arsenal on full display showing the prowess to score at all 3 levels. Dawson finished with 16 points. Dawson did damage slashing to the rim and shooting off the dribble.
Mason Hooks (Harvard Westlake, 2020, C)
The bigman wrecked havoc inside en route to 22 points for the Harvard Westlake Wolverines. Hooks had his way in the paint with a myriad of post ups scores and put backs. Hooks was also able to show a soft touch and hit a couple shots from midrange. In the paint, Hooks uses his big body to push guys around and does a great job protecting the rim. Mason displays a high basketball IQ, playing his role, making smart decisions, and not forcing the action.
Remington Rofer (Loyola, 2021, F)
Most impressive to start the morning session was Remington Rofer from Loyola. Rofer looks to have grown about 4 inches over the summer after standing in at 6’4″ last year. The 6’8″ forward was very impressive en route to a game high 27 points. Rofer scored in the post with drop steps and hooks and also facing up. He also has the potential to put the ball on the ground. He brings a ton of energy and plays with a high motor.
Solomon Jones (LB Poly, 2020, F/C)
The 6’8″ big man from Long Beach Poly was a standout for the Jackrabbits. Jones is a mobile forward who understands his role. He does a great job of boxing his man out, running the floor, and crashing the boards. He shows flashes of being able to face up and hit a couple 15 footers when facing the rim. Solomon runs the floor with purpose and plays calm and collective. Jones finished with 15 points.

Wynton Brown (St. John Bosco, 2020, Wing)
Pure athleticism is the first thing you think of when you see Brown on the floor. The 6’7″ senior finished with a team high 13 points in the win over Long Beach Poly. Brown does a great job running the floor and getting to the rim. He plays with high intensity, crashes the boards, and moves well on defense. Brown brings it on both sides of the ball.
