Isaiah Johnson, Bishop Montgomery
Johnson continues to be one of the hardest playing forwards in the state and it shows in his production on both ends. The 6-foot-7 senior is extremely versatile on the defensive end with his ability to guard positions 1 through 5. Johnson rebounds at a high rate both in and out of his area and runs the floor with purpose on the break. One of the biggest improvements Johnson has made is with his shooting form. He’s a more confident perimeter shooter than in year’s past and hit a couple of deep jumpers while scoring 32 points in a loss to Rancho Christian.
Solomon Jones, Long Beach Poly
Jones had a productive outing with 15 points though the Jackrabbits fell to St. John Bosco. The 6-foot-7 forward has always been a high-energy guy and bouncy finisher in transition, but he continues to make solid improvements with his hands, footwork and consistency at the free throw line. Jones still has some work to do, especially when it comes to him spreading the floor in the half-court setting, but his motor allows him to get things done.
Evan Mobley, Rancho Christian
Mobley helped the Eagles erase a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Bishop Montgomery, 70-66. The 7-footer is a freakish rim protector due to his length, timing and athleticism. He blocked and change countless shots in the paint, especially late in the game when Rancho Christian needed him most. Mobley scored 16 points in the win.
Windward forward Kijani Wright scored 12 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, as the Wildcats defeated Westchester, 70-53, at the Rolling Hills Prep Fall Classic.Remington Rofer, Loyola
Rofer may have had the most impressive outing of the day when you consider reputation coming into the event. The 6-foot-8 junior scored 27 points in a win over La Cañada and did so in a variety of ways. Rofer hit the pick-and-pop 3-point shot and knocked them down when trailing the play in transition, as well. He showed good hands and footwork when diving to the rim and maneuvering through traffic.
Kijani Wright, Windward
Wright had his inside-out versatility on display in a win over Westchester. The 6-foot-8 sophomore scored 12 points, but it was his efficiency and ability to draw fouls and convert at the free throw that stood out the most. Wright was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and knocked down a 3-pointer, proving that he’s one of the more difficult covers in SoCal high school basketball.
