Continue ReadingRecruitment is really starting to heat up for many of the top 2021 prospects around the state and Seattle Academy’s Leo DeBruhl is one of those players that has really seen his recruitment grow in the last couple months. Leo is legitimately one of the top 10 junior prospects in Washington and I recently had a chance to catch with Leo where he talked about his game and his recruitment.
Leo described his Fall as being quite hectic between balancing out his academic load at SAAS and getting his daily workouts in. He has spent a lot of time on the court, as well as in the weight room. “From a basketball standpoint, I am trying to extend my range out beyond the new college 3-point line.” He has also seen an increase in strength and flexibility from his weight room work, which can be seen in his game now, “I have definitely seen the on-court benefits of being stronger in the past few months.” Leo’s frame continues to grow stronger and he now stands a legitimate 6’2 and a little over 180 pounds, which makes it harder for smaller guards to stick him defensively now.
Coach Hayford and the Seattle University staff have already offered the star point guard, but he has a handful of other schools that are involved with his recruitment. Pepperdine made it a point to visit him the first week that coaches were allowed to by NCAA rules. Other colleges expected to make stops at SAAS include Washington State, San Diego, UCSB, and Air Force.
Coach Ken Bone at Pepperdine University has played one of the most active roles in Leo’s recruitment and texts and speaks with him frequently. “I would describe the recruitment as very enjoyable. It has been a great experience getting to meet and talk to many different coaches and get to see the different cultures at these schools.”
As far as what the 6’2 PG is looking for in a school he says, “I am just looking for the right fit for me personally, which includes the right combination of academics with a coaching staff that I would be comfortable playing for and that sincerely wants me to play for them. I haven’t thought much yet about geographic locations, but my family is very important to me, so someplace close would be nice.” He does not plan on making a decision at this moment and he is mostly focused on winning a 1A state championship, working on his game and having a strong travel ball season with Seattle Rotary. “My parents and I will probably begin sorting things out about this time next fall.”
