The tough 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard is coming off a solid summer not only running on the AAU circuit again with Elite 24/Cascadia Hoops but also with his Silverton High School teammates. As his senior season approaches, Gonzales has been also working on his college recruitment and has started taking some campus visits.
Currently, Gonzales notes that he’s been hearing the most from Colorado Mesa and Chico State, with a little bit of interest coming from Western Oregon. He recently made a visit to Colorado Mesa and another to Chico State will be upcoming.
“It was fun,” Gonzales said of the visit to Colorado Mesa. “(With) Chico State, I’ll practice with them and once they see me practice live they’ll make a decision from there. They’ve been on me pretty hard the past six months – they send me mail like every day.”
Gonzales is definitely hopeful that some offers will come his way but he’s not rushing into any decisions. He notes that going to the Air Force Academy’s prep school could very well be an option after his senior season, which gives a backdrop for his current line of thinking.
“I don’t think I’m going to commit early,” Gonzales said. “I think I’m going to wait it out and I think I may play another unsigned senior AAU round. I haven’t really decided – I just want to see what comes during the season and a little bit after and see how things turn out.”
Speaking of the season, Silverton is coming off of an appearance in the state tournament and Gonzales is hopeful that can happen again. “We’ll be pretty solid,” Gonzales said. “We have some guys that have stepped up over the summer and we went to some team camps and did really well. We have a lot of seniors and I think we’ll be looking for sure at the state tournament, we’re just not sure where we’ll head afterward.”
Gonzales currently ranks as the #13 player in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
