The strong 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior helped lead Oregon City to the state tournament last season and is priming himself for another run at Chiles this year. Best had a very busy summer playing ball both club and with his high school teammates and some college recruitment interest has emerged as a result.
This summer, Best split his time between Jordan Team Fly and the Pioneers. “We played against some tough competition (with Jordan Team Fly) and I think I played pretty well,” Best said. “I attacked, was able to finish against big dudes, and hit my shots. I went to Las Vegas with OC and we did pretty good and got to the silver bracket, which was a little better than last year where we made it to the bronze. We competed and did our thing.”
Best also attended two elite camps, incidentally in the same day with Northwest Christian in the morning and then Western Oregon in the afternoon. “I liked the camp and the coaches and I shot the ball really well at NCU,” Best said. “At Western Oregon I played against some good competition there. All the really good guards, I really loved competing against them. It was fun.”
Best had some goals going into the spring and summer with his skills. Always a hard-nosed defender, he’s developed his outside shot and he feels some other areas continue to evolve. “I’ve been trying to develop my mid-range game,” Best said. “I didn’t really take many of those last year so I’m trying to work on my step-backs and pull-ups. Also, I’m trying to be more creative around the basket.”
The hope this summer was to get some college programs interested and in addition to Northwest Christian and Western Oregon, Best notes that George Fox, OIT, Cal State Maritime, and Clackamas CC have been in contact and are planning on watching him this season. He’s keeping things wide open as he looks forward to his last year in high school.
“It’s going to be a grind like last year,” Best said. “We’re a hard-working team so we’ll have to fight for it. We’ve got a good group and I think we’ll do well.”
Best currently ranks #30 in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
