The hard-working 5-11, 160-pound guard goes all out on the floor whenever he’s in the ballgame and thanks to exhibiting that motor this summer with his Hoop Salem AAU team and at elite camps, the South Salem senior recently picked up his first scholarship offer.
Pruett first made an impression on college coaches playing with Hoop Salem on their Select team. “It was a lot of fun and we did pretty well,” Pruett said. “We were supposed to be like the B or C squad or whatever and we ended up going like 16-4 in the summer. I came off the bench was kind of an energy guy and the backup point guard.”
Pruett backed up current teammate Trey Galbraith and Churchill senior Isaiah Wallace in the backcourt. His willingness to get down and dirty on the defensive end certainly got the attention of those that watched. “Talking to coaches they say that I can guard at the next level but they want to see if I can score at the next level too,” Pruett said. “I’m trying to work on that a lot and build my confidence that I can score a little bit.”
In addition to AAU ball, Pruett has hit open gyms at Linn-Benton and also went to Multnomah’s elite camp, where he picked up his first scholarship offer. “I’ve been to their elite camps the past two years and I’ve built a relationship with their assistant coach Jason Patterson – he’s a really good dude,” Pruett said. “I’m excited with the opportunity as it’s my first one. I’d love for more to come in but if that’s my only offer I think I’d be happy with that’s where I ended up.”
Pruett is staying open, noting that if a Division III school like George Fox or Pacific came along and were able to offer him a good financial package, he would strongly consider that as well. “I’m trying to get as much (scholarship) money as I can as college is expensive,” Pruett said. “So that’s what I’m kind of looking at mainly. I feel like basketball-wise, I can find my role – I’m the type of player that I can play wherever and I can fit myself into any system. So I’m not worried about that too much.”
Things should play out for Pruett as his senior season plays out. A transfer from West Salem, he feels that he’s fit in so far with his new teammates and feels the sky is the limit. “It’s been really good,” Pruett said. “We have several transfers that came in and we’re all meshing together well so far. I’m very excited and I think it’s going to be a really good opportunity to make the playoffs and our goal is to put up a banner at the end of the year.”
Pruett currently ranks as the #89 player in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
