Prospect Spotlight: John Awoke (2023)
John Awoke, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard from Annandale, was one of the biggest standouts at the South County Fall Team Camp earlier this month. He stood out as an impact player on both ends of the court. Awoke played lockdown defense, ran the offense efficiently, and took what the defense gave him. For a young player, he shows good poise and makes good decisions on the court, attributes that are essential for a budding point guard prospect.
“I’m a big point guard,” Awoke told Prep Hoops. “I love the mid-range. I can get to the basket, get my teammates involved, and I play D.”
One of the most impressive parts of Awoke’s game is his proficiency from the mid-range. He has a quick first step and can pull-up on a dime. While Awoke is a confident spot-up shooter from three, he admits that there is more work to do in that area of his game.
“I need to work on being a knockdown shooter,” he stated. “I can shoot now, but I need to be a dead-eye. I also need to be a little more vocal and add some weight.”
Modeling his game after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Awoke has some similarities with the Thunder point guard. He is a big guard who defends, gets to his spots, and has a bright future. This year, Awoke’s role for the Atoms will be to score, defend, and run the team’s offense.
What are his goals?
“My goals are to win the district and win district player of the year.”
