Prospect Spotlight: Gavin Walsh (2022)
With how the game of basketball is trending today, versatility is an important trait that those involved with the sport are coveting more and more. Positions are becoming a moot point, and it’s important for prospects to embrace the reality that they will need to find multiple ways to impact the game on both ends of the court if they hope to add value to a college or pro team. Gavin Walsh, a 6’6″ 15-year-old sophomore from Loyola-Blakefield, is a young prospect that looks like he could fit the prototype of a very good modern player.
“I think I’m a versatile scorer at 6-foot-6,” Walsh told Prep Hoops. “I can shoot the ball, and I can drive it in. I’m good at drawing fouls. I’m a pretty good defensive player. I like to play like a more guard which I think has helped me cause I’m 6’6 and still growing.”
One of the most intriguing things about Walsh is his mobility. He’s light on his feet, moves well laterally, and is just as comfortable defending on the perimeter as he is in the paint. Walsh has shown that he understands the nuances of the game and what it takes to be a good team defender.
“I like to talk a lot on the court. I probably need to be louder with my talking, but for the most part, I’m pretty good at communicating out there. I like to talk on pick-and-rolls. Not many people do that. And on switches, I like to talk as well.”
Basketball runs in the Walsh family. Gavin’s older brother Colin, who will be a sophomore at Stonehill College, was a standout at Boys’ Latin and with the Jersey Shore Warriors. It’s only natural that the younger brother wants to match and potentially exceed his older brother’s accomplishments.
“I want to play D1,” Walsh stated. “My brother played D2 so I want to go one more than him.”
Gavin Walsh is currently ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-60 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s 2022 class, click here.
