Prospect Spotlight: Cam Smith (2021)
Loyola had a ton of upperclassmen leadership during last year’s run to the MIAA A Conference semifinals, but 2021 Cam Smith was one of the young players who saw his role increase dramatically as the season progressed.
The 6-foot-7 forward brought an athletic presence to the frontcourt that is necessary when playing in the MIAA. Smith can finish above the rim, is a capable shooter from 15 feet and can even knock down the occasional three.
After not seeing Smith all spring and summer while he played with Team Thrill, I had the chance to watch him during a recent team workout. It seems he has made improvements to his body, become even more athletic and has tightened up his offensive skill set.
“I definitely feel like I got more athletic,” Smith said when reflecting over the improvements he made over the summer. “Getting to the rim with either my right or left hand. Finishing around the hoop and making sure I’m making easy jumpers.”
Looking forward to this season, Smith will take on a much bigger role starting in the frontcourt next to senior Mitch Fischer. The two balance out each other well with Smith providing the athleticism and Fischer providing the high IQ and shot making from the perimeter.
“I’m just trying to get better and help my team win games,” Smith said. “We definitely want to make it to the MIAA and BCL Championship game. Other things like making First-Team All Metro and First-Team All MIAA are other things on my list that I’d like to accomplish.”
A couple of low major programs have started to track Smith, but should get a much better feel for his game with the opportunities that will come his way this season.
