Treagan Azure, a 6-foot-3 swingman, stuffed the stat sheet on a regular basis last year, averaging 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals. He’ll be in position to do even more this winter as he is the undisputed lead dog for a team that will find itself playing a number of strong teams throughout the season.
“I’m very hyped about the upcoming season,” Azure said. “The energy we have in open gyms is amazing. We have great team chemistry. I feel like we can go far this year. Losing some guys is tough but I believe we have good enough guys to fill in their spots. My job as a leader is to make sure they are focused and locked in and ready to play. Go 100 percent every game and treat it like it is their last.”
Azure burst onto the scene last year for the Dragons, piling up impressive performances against some very good teams. At 6-foot-3, he’s a guy who can do a lot of things on the court. He’s an excellent 3-point shooter and has the length and craftiness to get separation for a shot against one-on-one defense. He can get to the paint and either finish or create for his teammates. He’s a solid rebounder and a competitive defender.
“I drive to the hoop and defend well,” said Azure. “I’m good at looking for the open guy too. I’d really like to improve on my rebounding and being able to take the ball away from people. Those things would really help our team score easier on the other end.”
Azure is an intriguing prospect at the next level because of his varying skillset. He said he hasn’t talked to a lot of schools at this point – exposure for him is limited given he didn’t play a great deal over the summer – but has drawn a little bit of interest from several local programs.
“I’m hoping to play college ball,” Azure said. “I haven’t heard from a lot of schools though I’ve talked a little bit with Jamestown and UND.”
