Continue ReadingComing over from Serbia in early August, Canterbury Fort Myers earned a big addition in Jovan Kojic.
The 6’7″, 215-pounder has settled in nicely in the United States and has quickly made his presence known for the Cougars. I stopped by the Lehigh Fall League earlier this month and Kojic was shooting at a high clip, attacking the basket with his shifty moves and playing tough-nosed defense. His ballhandling and strength can improve but for now, he will do wonders for the Class 3A program.
“I wanted a new experience in my life, to play basketball at a high level and to finish my high school studying at a good school,” Kojic told Prep Hoops. “Canterbury is a really good place for this. It will prepare me for college, which is my goal. I want to help my team to win as many games as possible. Canterbury lost last year in the region finals, so the aim is to go higher this year. I also want to help my younger teammates because they will be in the same position as me in a few years.”
There is no travel ball in Serbia so he didn’t play for a team this summer. Prior to the move to the United States, Kojic played for a local team called OKK “Spartak.”
“We competed with boys that are my age or younger (U18). It was on the level of the region. I used to play as a small forward or power forward,” he said. “I improved my movements when off-ball and understanding the game with sets and actions.”
No offers have come yet, but Kojic has drawn interest from Division I programs Stetson and FGCU as well NAIA’s St. Benedict as Division III schools Sage, Houghton, Bethany Luthern and Connecticut College. He performed well at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo in September and was able to play in front of 25 plus college coaches on hand.
“I appreciate all of that because it’s only been two months since I came here. I am very satisfied they see some potential in me,” Kojic said.
In terms of his top abilities, he pointed to his shooting, basketball knowledge and passing. Kojic says he is working on his dribbling, conditioning and footwork.
He said he is blessed and appreciates all the support from his host family, coaches and teachers.
A well balanced shooter and a very instinctive team player, Kojic is a true Euro-type prospect. He can mix it up on both ends and isn’t afraid to get to the rim on offense and grab boards as well as block shots. Once his ballhandling and overall toughness continue to improve, the more looks he’ll draw now that he’s in the US. Canterbury has a true big/scorer they can lean on this season alongside 2021 duo Chase Garrett and Alan Cedeno.
