At 6′ 0″ and 195 lbs, Micah Area (2021) of Mountain View High School is no different. “The dream is to play basketball as long as I can, I plan to play college basketball and hopefully professionally somewhere.”
Micah Area (2021) with his Nike Team Northwest Coach Omar LearyBasketball has always been something Area (2021) has enjoyed. “I love playing basketball! I love hearing that sweet, wonderful, magnificent noise that the ball makes when it swishes through the net. I also love the fact that basketball never ends. There is always a bigger goal you can achieve and always something you need to work on.” To improve his game Area (2021) trains with Taylor Bateman at Off The Field. “My Strengths are shooting, dribbling, and finishing around the rim. I’m always trying to improve my defense.” When asked to describe Area (2021) his Nike Team Northwest Coach Omar Leary said, “Micah has made a huge jump in his game from 2018 to 2019. Micah has always had a knack for shooting the basketball to keep the defense honest . Micah has now added the ability to get to the rim and to defend at a high level . Area is a true winner and will do whatever is asked of him for the greater good of the team. He is a player I believe would be an addition to any college program . Area is primed for a breakout junior season.”
Area (2021) has been playing AAU ball in very competitive tournaments for some very good teams. “I have played for Hoop Dreams, Team Maeko, Nike Team Northwest EYBL, and Hoop Salem. I have played in almost every big tournament in the Northwest. I’ve also played in 3 EYBL tournaments in LA, Texas, and Virginia.”
Area (2021) says that playing grass roots basketball has been a big part of his development as a player, “AAU has helped me become a better player because it creates an environment where I can better my skills and compete at a high level all the time.” With Nike Team Northwest EYBL Area (2021) led the team in scoring averaging 20+ points per game.
Basketball has also been the source of some great memories over the years, “In 5th grade I went to Michael Jordan’s Basketball Camp in Santa Barbara, in 7th grade I scored 32 points in Seattle against a team from Montana, and in 8th grade my school basketball team went to China to play against some local high schools.”
Another way Area (2021) has been trying to get exposure is by playing in showcases and exposure events. “I’ve played in tons of showcases and exposure events, they were all good experiences playing against really good competition that you don’t often see especially living in Idaho. The showcases and exposure events have been all over the country from Boo Williams EYBL Invitational in Virginia, Nike EYBL in Dallas and Las Vegas tourneys.”
This year Area (2021) will be at a new school and hoping to add to the great memories basketball has given him so far. “I believe my high school season will be great. I just transferred to Mountain View, where I will be teaming up with Josh Gillespie (2021) and I’m excited to say big things are ahead!!”
