This is one of the most difficult POY races to pick, not only because of the other returning talent in the league, but because we actually aren’t 100% sure if Dekkers is actually going to play basketball this winter. He’s committed to play quarterback at Iowa State, and has a bright future there. If he takes the court this winter though, the Falcons have a dynamic offense that he’ll lead. He’s the league’s leading returnee in scoring and assists.
First Team
2020 Hunter Dekkers, West Sioux (22.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.7 steals, 82 3PM, 46.3 3P%)
Dekkers is a big-time scorer and distributor at the lead guard spot, and his 82 made 3s (at a ridiculous 46.3% no less) rank third among all returnees around the state. He’ll pace an offense that averaged 74.5 points a game last year.
2020 Jackson Louscher, South O’Brien (20.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.4 steals, 170 FTM)
The 6-2 wing led the Wolverines in scoring, rebounding and assists last season. His 170 made free throws were second in the state last year, and his 209 attempts were third.
2020 Bryce Coppock, West Sioux (28.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.9 steals, 72 3PM, 41.6 3P%)*
Coppock enters the season with 1,592 career points, and should become the 39th player in Iowa high school history with 2,000 career points this year. The Newell-Fonda transfer is a big-time scorer who will have to adjust to playing without the ball in his hands as much, but with his shooting, he should thrive in West Sioux’s up-tempo system.
2020 Spencer Schorg, Remsen St. Mary’s (15.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.9 steals, 51.4 FG%)
Schorg led the Hawks in scoring, assists and steals last season, helping lead them to their third straight state tournament. Capable of scoring effectively from all three levels, he’ll lead a St. Mary’s team that returns everyone.
2020 Austin Van Donge, Unity Christian (15.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.0 steals, 58.5 FG%)
The 6-2 do-everything forward led the Knights in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals last season, while shooting a remarkable 58.5% from the floor. In a league filled with talented players who could take this final spot, it’s Van Donge’s all-around stat-sheet stuffing ability that gets him this first team nod.
